Does anyone know what v6 24v 3.0 engines are like for like?
I.e, are the 166, 164 and GTV 3.0's the same units, or are there major differences?

Also, what differences are there between the years, factory upgrades etc?

I think sumps are different on some, not sure which tho, and exhaust manifolds through the years??

Thanks

The 166 and GTV are the same.

The 164 is different.

The 164 version uses a different oil pump and drive and a different cooling system layout. On the 164 I am pretty sure that the timing belt runs the waterpump.

I am sure there are other differences but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

Later versions of the 166 and GTV had different exhaust manifolding, due to being upgraded to CF3 spec and having pre cats. The inlet manifold on these has a large plug on the rear right hand side when looking at the engine from the front.

The cambelt layout on the 164 isn't as good as the 166/GTV/Spider units.
Not much of the belt touches the rear pulley and they are more susceptible to the cambelt jumping.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I was looking at a 164 engine as a doner for parts on my GTV. Good job I asked here.

So a 166 should be ok if I find one.

Cheers
