Hi all, been a member on here a while as used to own a V6 GTV (so fully aware of the fun involved of running an old Alfa!). Anyway, thinking of a 166 and the following one is advertised on the classifieds Alfa Romeo Classifieds - Auctions - 166 3.0 V6 Sportronic - Powered by PhotoPost Classifieds. The guy sent me some pics and it needs some cosmetic work, main thing is the cambelt was changed in 2009 so am I right in thinking it's due this year based on time?

Cheers

Hi St Johns,

Yep, I would definitely budget for a cambelt and waterpump (get the one with metallic impellers). And check for moist underneath the ICS near the relays and your gearbox ECU (it could be the heater matrix leaking). The matrix itself is not that bad to do cost wise, but if it fries you gearbox ECU it writes off the car so make sure you bag the ECU if you go for it.

Looks good though and LPG makes it almost economical ;).

That's Freddie's car. He's had a few 166s so you know you are buying from someone who knows how to maintain them and looks after them. He's a nice bloke too so I say you should go for it (I've bought various parts off him in the past). Even if it needs the belts done and some TLC I think that's a very good price when you take into account the LPG system. It's on very are alloys also! Good luck.

I have a GTV and a 166 (both V6s) and love them both for different reasons.

My only word of caution would be to think about the Sportronic. I have only had manuals so I should not comment but I am guessing your GTV was manual so to keep the fun a manual V6 166 might be a better option. In the UK these were often badged as a "Super".

To second whats already been said, checking the heater matrix is priority number 1, it killed my 1st 166. Personally i'd go for a manual, i had a Sportronic, now have a manual super and i'd go manual but thats not saying the sportronic is bad i just prefer the manual, faster and more economical.

the only issue with waiting until the right one comes along - you will almost certainly be compromising on something! Of course that is a personal thing and only you can say what you are prepared to " compromise " on - but I love those wheels and if it has good provenance etc etc :) (just my tuppence worth)

You say they are not worth much but you want one they are disappearing fast and most are sportronic so better get searching.
You need to look at what it will cost and if it's worth it to you not the value on the car.
If it was a GTV you would be looking at nearly 3x that ?
