Hi guys,

My Spider was remapped recently and the clutch has started slipping.

I have bought a clutch kit and sent it to Performance Clutch Specialists in Leeds for reinforcement.

I can either have it reinforced with kevlar, or have it modified to incorporate a paddle system.

MVC who are fitting the clutch warned me away from a paddle clutch, as in their experience they are very heavy and act like an 'on/ off' switch.

However Clutch Specialists have advised me that because my car is putting out circa 25% more torque than standard, this is about the limits of what the kevlar reinforced clutches can handle and are suggesting I consider a paddle clutch. They reckon the action on modern paddle clutches is not much different from a standard clutch. However, although they have done loads of 156/ GT clutches, this will be the first Brera/ Spider clutch they have modified so it is a bit of an unknown as to how robust the standard item is and whether just kevlar reinforcement will be sufficient.

Parts, labour and upgrade are costing me a bag of sand, so could do with getting this right first time really.

I do a lot of driving in heavy traffic every day slogging into Manchester in rush hour so definitely do not want a heavy clutch. Though equally the whole point of the exercise is to replace the OEM clutch with something better equipped to take the remapped torque.

I need to decide tomorrow and would welcome your input guys, particularly from Clogz and JBSmith as you boys are obviously putting out big power now. What clutches are you using now?

yep, cerametallic pads clutch acts rather like on/off. I would recommend kevlar, or stronger organic friction pads.

Still on my original clutch mate. JB is also on a standard clutch. We both can't help feeling it is better for the clutch to slip a little than put the full load through the dmf and gearbox with a reinforced clutch. Having said that, mine's not slipping...

yep as clogz says I'm on a stock clutch and dmf, the std clutch will handle the smooth torque delivery from the F1 map no problem, but clutch wear will increase with all the traffic stop starting you do.
I would just replace with std clutch if its slipping mate.:thumbs:

Hiya fellas - thanks for your replies.

Given that my current clutch only has 34k on it and only 2k post remap before it has started slipping, I think an upgrade has got to be on the cards one way or another as I can't see a standard clutch lasting long with the stop start of my daily grind.

I will try the Kevlar option as a compromise and see how it goes.

Hi JJ, as james said the F1 map is so smooth that it won't be a problem on a standard clutch. There are cars about with an F1 map that are still on the original clutch with more than 60k miles on the clock.:cool:

Maybe your clutch has had a tough life before you got it... A bad driver, remap or a cheap tuning box can put a lot of strain on the drivetrain. Mileage doesn't mean anything then....:(

Anyway, good luck and I may see you about on my daily commute on the m60/m56 car park...:thumbs:

I have the F1 map. Car has 90+k miles. 10k of which with the remap. I am STILL on original clutch. As clogz said, it may have been abused previously. Original clutch is fine. If you really want to, go for an uprated one. Paddle clutches are terrible IMO. Try hill starts with one. Makes you look like a learner driver.

I think it must be all my city driving then that is killing the clutch.

My old GT JTD was fettled with around 30k too and within a few thousand miles the clutch was slipping.

Thanks for your input guys, I will let you know how I get on.

Just run through the final spec for the job - drive plate is rebuilt using grooved kevlar to transfer less heat, whilst the pressure plate is slotted to increase grip.

Apparently there was no need to uprate the springs as the standard ones are already very strong.

Cost of modification £150 inc VAT.

Will take some pics when it is delivered in case anyone wants to go down this route in future and is interested in what the finished article looks like.

I bought the car at 29k so maybe your right and the previous driver was hammering it. The missus drives it too so this could be a contributing factor as she does seem to be trying her hardest to kill the car.

The 18" multispokes were immaculate, but she soon put that to an end the other day, gouging a chunk out of the front near side wheel. When I asked her about it she tried to feign ignorance, but soon cracked and confessed under questioning!

She also parked on a hill the other day and didn't put the handbrake on properly so the car rolled into a parked car in front scuffing and warping the front bumper near the badge. Not too bad thankfully!

To top it off I let my mate drive it to the pub the other day and when he parked up he scratched the other front wheel against the kurb. At least they match now! :lol:

Moral of the story - if anyone asks to drive your car tell them to &£€$ off.

My wife is completely banned from going anywhere near my car...let alone drive it! :tut: of course she's welcome to drive my Shigane anytime...:thumbs:
