All, Hope you can assist in solving a fault that appeared on my 156 tonight.

Started when there was a bit of a strange smell in the cabin. kind of like a burning or similar. I then noticed that the battery light is on on the dash. Had a quick peek under the bonnet with a torch, and think the smell might be emanating from the area of the alternator. Can anyone shed any light on what it might be? I'm thinking alternator bearings might be on their way out. I will try to get to a specialist tomorrow, just wondering if I might cause more damage? Anyone got similar stories that might assist? what else might have brought the battery light on and given a burning smell?

Is the aux belt going round? Damaged? I had a tensioner seize which resulted in the belt starting to shred itself Could be the alternator seized and the belt rubbing on that

Update - A quick call to my local indie, Sunnyside Autos in Chadwell Heath, and the nice chap told me what to check for, as he thought the alternator might be overcharging the battery. It turned out that the battery was only reading/getting 11.5 volts with engine running. I drove it to them, and they replaced the Alternator. They also gave me the AO DISCOUNT. Thanks to all at Sunnyside, i'll be back when a service is due.
