UPDATE: CAR NOW DRIVES, WITH GEAR SELECTION ERRORS >> READ BELOW (12TH POST)

Hey guys,

Just letting you know the progress of my bella.

If you can remember, I created a thread saying how my car would not start.

Well I did manage to get her started, but only when unplugging a certain connection (Can best be described as a round connection to the left of the Selespeed tank, about mid-depth. Consists of 3 wires - red, white, white & brown, right next to other plugs which have a Magnetti Marelli sticker). This gives me a selespeed system failure but I can start her up, and put her in reverse and neutral. When I try put it in 1st I hear a series of 3 or 4 clunk sounds - the clutch push rod fails to move.

With the connection plugged in, it fails to start, nor can I change gears while its on ACC.

Rang up my local alfa specialist and he said it sounds like the actuator  But wont know until its hooked up to the examiner (probably wednesday).

Any thoughts would be much appreciated, I guess i'm seeking for someone to tell me it isn't the actuator and there could be a few possibilities as to what it is  I really can't afford it right now..

Urgently awaiting any response..

Well guys, just got news back from the mechanic.

He hooked it up to the examiner and said there were a few errors the main one being a selection issue with the selespeed/gearbox.

He cleared those errors and the car now starts, however, only R, N, 1, 2 & 5th can be selected. It tries to go into 3rd & 4th but wont (you can hear it trying).

He thinks there may be something lodged in the gearbox and to have a look at it, it would roughly be 13 hours of labour @ $110AUD p/h.

I told him not to worry about it as I can't afford that amount of money at this moment and am putting complete faith in this forum hoping for a simple solution.

So please guys, help me out here.. I'll buy all of you pressies! (Not amounting to $1300) :p

Make sure the actuator is securely bolted to the gearbox, if it is loose and moving slightly strange things happen.

If it goes go as far as stripping the gearbox, you may find that a new recon gearbox from Alfa will cost less than rebuilding your existing gearbox (depending on labour rates).

Ok, just got the car from the mechanics and here is the report exactly as it is.

--------------------------------------------------

- VEHICLE TOWED TO WORKSHOP
- CAR WOULD NOT START
- DISPLAY ON DASH READING IN REVERSE BUT VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL
- RUN ON EXAMINER
- CHECK FOR FAULTS
- FAULT LOGGED ( SELECTION ERROR )
- CLEAR FAULTS
- RE CALIBRATE GEAR BOX
- ADJUST CLUTCH PLUNGER
- ATTEMPT TO SELECT GEARS
- VEHICLE ONLY ABLE TO SELECT 1ST, 2ND, 5TH & REVERSE
- PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE INTERNAL GEAR BOX
- REQUIRES ACTUATOR REMOVAL TO FURTHER ASSES
- ROAD TEST

FINAL WORDS: VEHICLE NEEDS ACTUATOR REMOVED TO DETERMINE IF THERE IS A GEAR BOX PROBLEM OR IF THERE IS AN ACTUATOR PROBLEM.

--------------------------------------------------
Now while driving home, I noticed that from 2ND you can not go into 3RD, however, once it engages 5TH, you can then drop down into 4TH & then 3RD and proceed as normal (up to 5th)

So it goes something like this (where ^ simulates gear changing upwards, and v simulates gear changing downwards).

1 ^ 2 ^ ^ 5 v 4 v 3

From 2nd, You can hear it trying to engage 3rd but it wont. If I push the shifter up 3 times while in 2nd I can go directly to 5th almost instantly and then drop down to 3rd and proceed as normal. Once it drops below 3rd the same process must be taken (2nd to 5th then down).

Any thoughts ?

I think as David suggested, the gearbox casing has cracked and the actuator doesnt have a stable platform to work from.

I think the gearbox is cheaper than the actuator unit, but it is a much longer time to replace.

In regards to the gearbox casing being cracked, is there any way I can visually check it without getting underneath the car?

Makker, I live in kogarah so only 15 mins from Leichardt.. If nothing progresses soon than by all means we shall organize something :)

Just posting an update on this if anyone has any new possible solutions or ideas as to what it may be.

Nothing has progressed, it has not gotten any worse, nor has it gotten any better. (2ND to 3RD just wont work, read 5 posts up).

Spoke to another mechanic and he said he came across a similar problem - just a different gear (3RD to 4TH) and it ended up being a faulty Selespeed ECU (he included the word fried-circuit or short-circuit).

Another thing worth mentioning (I hope) is when the car is in the process of trying to engage 3RD from 2ND and my indicators are on, I sometimes, in the corner of my eye, notice the indicator lights on the dash stop working - basicall in perfect synch.. Could it be as simple as replacing the battery? If so, why didnt the last independant think of this?

Will be greatful for any feedback!!!!!!!!!!!

Best of Biggest Luck To you mate. Simple question I need to know if I (prayer's and more prayer's) have anything similar, are you using a slave battery/leads, with all the carrier and stuff removed, to check the operation of the thing. Presume you must be, so have entered another stupid, fascile, question, wouldn't mind an answer though!!
