Hi please can anyone help, I am calling on the great knowledge the site memebers. I have Unusual issue please read.
I have been trying to connect to my Alfa 156 v6 52 plate EOBD diagnostics for a while now then yesterday error light pops up. So after trying different leads laptops etc fiat ecu scan alfa diag etc etc. I thought i'll take to a alfa specialist in Poole Dorset Italian car spares and they can not connect either no responce from ecu is my message there examiner no connection either. So they say could be either broken wire between OBD connector to the ECU or ECU internal fault. However the ECU error light was not on this morning and fingers crossed it still clear now but I am now bricking it as clutch needs doing to and i have money for that but not this unless anyone knows where there is cheap new ecu's rather than do the second hand change everything plan. :tut: Would this ECU reset procedure work where you do
1. Disconnect battery for 45 mins
2. Reconnect battery, and turn ignition to MAR for 90 secs
3. Turn off and leave 90 secs
4. Start engine WITHOUT pressing throttle and let the car idle for 15 mins (I repeat, do not touch the throttle whilst the car is idling)
5. Turn engine off and leave for 10 minutes
6. Start the car and go for a drive, using a number of styles (eg town, motorway, thrash etc)

Please anyone i need help its only done 78,000 and it flys  so do not want to let it go if i can avoid it comeone ALFA PEOPLE
I am going mental

I'm not advocating replacing your ecu since its working but IF you have to I posted a linky to ebay offering new ecus in the general alfa discussion forum last few days. You would need to check ecu number and since I have never had to pay for a new ecu I dont know how cheap they actually are.

Given your ecu is seemingly working ok I'd have thought it might be the 16 pin connector at fault somewhere

Thanks for advice just seen some on ebay new around £300 but not my model me3.1 eobd
I was thinking the connector aswell maybe one of the pins is not connecting correctly or is squashed, none have poked out at the back though. I hope it is just a broken wire somewhere correction I prey PLEASE ANYONE ADVISE HAS THIS EVER HAPPEND TO ANYONE If i use a multi meter and connect one at the connector and the other at the ecu connection block could i find broken wire this way if one does not read a connection however say wire 1 in obd port which wire is that at the ecu end???? stumped there

THANKS I'll have to contact him. I asked the Alfa specialist and they said out of all they see with this problem most of the time its the ecu at fault does anyone know if the reset might work I'll try this I hope this might help another thing that was funny was when you opened my door the display that shows open doors was saying that the rear passenger door was open but not as bright like normal. This was also intermitent aswell so??? maybe bad earth but would that throw up engine light, also the alarm went of in the middle of the night and would not re arm without going of again straight away. But again seems ok now touch wood (my head) lol
Any help please

I wonder if a remap would sort it at least then i'll get something extra out of it rather than a standard one

Disconnecting battery isn't going to help if it's a broken wire.

What cables have you tried? VAG-COM KKL is the one most of us use, although being a later model the ELm327 might work with FiatECUScan (it's listed on their website).

Are you sure that one of the pins hasn't pushed out the back of the ODB socket on the fuse box? It might be wise to disconnect the battery to check but you don't need many connections for it to connect. Can't find my list on pins at the moment but I'm sure someone has this to hand.

The engine light could be several things but I've found the lambda sensor(s) and camshaft sensor to be the most common cuases on my TS ... might be differnt on your V6 though :(

If your car is running OK I wouldn't panic about it - milady's 156 Sportwagon has had the management light on for over a year now and its still running fine...I think its the cam sensor giving a dodgy reading but I'm not about to do a cambelt change just to check it.:)

If its a broken wire replacing the ECU etc won't help, either.

had the OBD plug out from its dash housing and checked all pins are pushed in ok no visual breaks anywhere but i have not tried connecting a meter at one end and then at the ecu end to see if any are broken as not sure what order they would come out at for example pin 1 on the OBD connector is which on the ecu end connector??? The man at Alfa's in Poole said most of the time its the ECU at fault when this happens but I did not think it was possible to damage ECU from interface leads etc It stayed of again today however the strange dash display for doors that are open is still doing when my door is open it says the rear passenger side is open but not as bright as normall. Would this be a bad earth?. I have a brand new bosch lambda which i am going to put on even though not sure if any are faulty. Not sure what to do if the clutch holds on and light stays off then thinking I'll put a new MOT on it and sell it on for £1500 maybe I dun know breaks my heart as i love this one it rips with the stainless exhaust and k&n addicted to the sound

Firstly dont panic and dont change anything that isnt faulty...

Secondly turn the key to MAR then using a multi meter set the dial to DC volts and the black probe to the screw on the door pillar, RED probe to the following and check pin 4, 5, and 16.
4 and 5 should be 0ish volts, and 16 should be 12+volts. If this is correct then you know you have 12 volts to the lead. Next insert the red probe into pin 16 and in turn check pins 4 and 5 again, what you are checking is the continuity to Ground/Neutral via the Signal/Body ground. again you are expecting to see 12volts.

Check these then come back and report your finding then we can go from there.

Sounds like your getting 12v on pin 16, worth check the other two pins. I suspect though that the might be a break in a cable else where.

Something further you can try is to disconnect the battery and un clip the enc plugs check there is no corrosion if so clean it and refit and reconnect the battery and try again...

Hi ya yes voltmeter shows 12volt at 16 well almost 13 but 4 and 5 pins nothing not even a flicker. I tried all the dc settings nothing even with key at mar and engine running and off so?? I spoke to the local Meridan alfa dealer today about trying to test leads running to ecu etc and they looked at me as if i was talking french so not much help there. Unless of course i cough up a new ecu:wow:
The abs light went out today so maybe just did not like the snow or programming for snow conditions no good.
