Turbo V6 3L 24V (Dyno results 450CV - 60Kgm torque)

Hi all,
I have started with my project and I want to share with you some pictures and specs.

Car: 164 Super 1996
Base Engine: Alfa Romeo V6 3L 24V (45mm Intake runners)
HP: 215HP
Wanted HP: 330-380
Fuel manag: Megasquirt 1 Plus
Injectors: 50lbs hi-impedance
Ignition manag: Megasquirt 1 Plus (COP – 6coils)
Cylinder Head: Reconditioned and air intake machined.
Connecting Rods: Standards
Pistons: Forget pistons 9:1 Ratio
Turbo: GT3582
Wastegate: Tial 42mm
Intercooler: Water-Air Intercooler.

We have started with Headers and Turbo support, I could not find stock parts to help me on headers task, so, we need to build all exhaust header and turbo support.
Then we will proceed with engine rebuild.
I hope that we finish in 2,5 months with all mechanical modifications and we will start with Megasquirt Tuning (another 15) days.

This is a link to another post (in spanish) with more pics.

Here are some pics

Here you will see where will be located the Water Cooler (the ABS was realocated)

I will be posting any progress, please feel free to ask me anything that you need

BTW: The turbine in the pictures is not the rigth turbine it is a bit small turbine T3 to build the headers.

Regards

Pablo

Yes I will use the Original RPM sensor and the original cables , and "may be" we are going to change the Cable with a new cable from SURE microphones that have a really good isolation. Also we have a good experience with MS but on 4 cilinders projects most of them Turbo projects, So, I hope we could resolve most of the issues... Anyway I will keep you informed, the stage of MS will be done in 1,5 months

Hope you wont have any problems reading rpm's.
Will subscribe to this thread - i'm planing some turbo or charger upgrade for my 2.5V6, and have no choice but using MS2.

Well we have finished the engine rebuilt and now we have moved to the gearbox, with some luck in a few weeks we will start to deal with Megasquirt , here are more pics of the engine rebuilt project

The time to "first startup is near..." BTW: we will be doing the first startup with original ECU, and after some checks we will move to megasquirt.

Sorry for the silence, there are some news on the project and rigth now the engine is on the engine bay and we are very close to first start. First start will be using the original ECU, we'll test that all sensors work properly and then we will be swapping to Megasquirt 1. It should take less than one month.
Also we are evaluating to to adapt a big Brake Rotors (310 or 330mm) and use 4 Porsche Calipers (stage 1.5)
In the meanwhile I have adquired a set of OZ Ultraliggera (black) in 17x8 and trying to buy a set of Kony shock.

We will be building the rest of exhaust by our self using 3inch Stainless Steel pipe and also a stainless steel muffler (only one)

We also have defined the TURBO for stage 2, it will be a Holset HX35W hibrid: Hx40 Compressor / hx35W Turbine (16cm2)

I will be uploading some picks today at nigth.

Yes, excellent wheel choice. The 166 disc has bolt holds for a 108 PCD. Other 98 PCD choices would include standard GTV disc at 305 mm. Not sure about disc size on GTA variations, another option. The 305 disc requires 16 inch wheels, check spacing before going with 330 mm discs on your 17 inch wheels.

Good work!

Thanks for the information !! now I will need to change my plan :) . I will look for a 330 break rotors (that I know that will work with 17 wheels) and then send it to do the holes at 98mm ratio (alfa), also I don't know if this is possible but I would be nice to pass the actual front brake rottors to the rear position

I forget to post one more picture, related to the sparks, this are +1 cold than stock sparks and this are Iridium sparks
Iridium plugs are deffo the way to go these days. Keep up the good work.

I have experience with the V6 2.0 turbo. On the turbo, Alfa recommends a plug change every 20k Km. Even the Denso iridium plugs fell off tune quickly. The ground electodes erroded quickly, iridium held up perfectly. I am trying a racing plug that is iridium with a platinum ground electrode. At 3x the price of iridium, I cannot recommend them yet, still testing the plug life.

With the 24V engine, changing plugs is a bit of work. If your NGK iridiums fall off too quickly, you might look around for a plug with something other than the common ground electrode.

sparkplugs.com has some good spark plug cross reference info. I run Denso IW24 in the 2.0 turbo 164 and IK20 in my Alfa 24V engines. The 12V engines use the large/fat plug IW, while the 24V engines run IK series. Good news!!! I see plug prices much less since my last purchase. This website had been selling the Denso iridium plugs for $12, now $9.38.

Many thanks for the comments !

Here are some pics of advances, engine is on the engine compartment:

This is a ceramic belt to cover the exaust manifold and decrease the heating on the engine compartment.

here is the "oil in" for the turbine

Some pics of exaust manifold.

This is the union between front exhaust and rear exhaust, and Im reviewing because it is the ONLY place where I can put an external wastegate y the case that internal wastegate will be not enough and cause boost creep.

Excelent !!! this is what I was looking for ! some experience on 3Lt engine with internal wastegates !
Thank you so much for the advice !

Are you using divided exhaust or single exhaust ? Because the Holset turbos that I could see using divided exaust, have the wastegate exhaust on only one of exhaust, I don't like this but I don't know if this will work... at least this works for Dodge RAM ...

I will try to find some articles about the GTR turbos to see the internal wastegate..

Thanks again

I am using stock headers, manifolds, and the stock turbocharger support, just slightly modified on one side for the bigger compressor housing.
You are looking for some other experience on a 3000 turbocharger engine with internal wastegate? Just look at every Toyota Supra or Nissan Skyline with single turbo with about 400 hp, like my Gtv,to see what wg they use...

Hey Matt155q4 you are very welcome !
I will send my info by PM , Nice to find an Alfa fun living in the same country .

No big News about the proyect, we should be starting the car on the next week (with the motronic ECU to check that wverthing is ok)
I have meet with the turbo provider and we are moving to a Holset hibrid hx35 (hot side) and hx40 (cold side)
Hope to have news and more photos next week.
