Hi all.
So last week suffered serious turbo failure.
Have spent a few days stripping down the parts and can report the following:
Turbo shaft is snapped. The Bearing are completely shot as are the oil seals. The compressor blades seem to have suffered a strike of some kind a some point, but dont know if this was before or during this incident. Oil starvation does NOT seem to be the cause of the snapped shaft? Car has done 131k Miles on orginal turbo. I will add pictures of the damage soon.
Cleaned up all the bits and sourced a second hand turbo for 240 quid. Before people tell me i should go new etc this was not an option due to cash shortages currently. The turbo has 6 months warranty and after close inspection it looks in truly excellent condition, almost no shaft play and undamaged wheels and rotates very smoothly.
Waiting on a few bits from alfa (nuts and gaskets) and then its going back together. Hopefully tomorrow. I could not find any evdience of metal shaving in the pipes or intercooler so hopefully there will be no engine damage. It certainly started and sounded fine when i nursed it onto the drive before stripping it. New oil and filter going in.
If anybody has any watch outs or advice i will check again later, but failing that i will post up some pictures of the damage and of the strip/rebuild process asap.
Cheers
Luke
