Hi,

Got an unpleasant noise from my 147 2.0 TS Sele which I suspect is probably going to be terminal but clutching at straws hoping it could just be variator noise, which I also believe is buggered, or something like that.

TS engine noise - YouTube

Not greatest quality of sound I'm afraid. This was taken with revs from idle to about 4K. The noise seems to come in worst about 2.5K up through 3K but seemed to go off again after that. Only happens under load not on over run.

Cheers for any help!

It doesn't sound good - have you checked the oil level?

Oil level is ok. Changed the oil about 500 miles ago and it's gone down about 2 thirds the distance between max and min. Topped it up anyway.

It could have jumped a notch on the timing, belt is overdue but looked ok.

Also the noise seems more from the left, gearbox side of the engine and not uniform across the cylinders which made me think it wasn't timing. It's very tappy but I'm not too fussed about that, just the knocking/rattling noise.

Sounds like a tapping noise. You can get that from the timing being out but it sounds worse on your car.

It's in time with engine revolutions but sounds to fast for it to be a dropped valve. They sound more like hitting metal on metal like a toffee hammer against a tin.

That's not good :(

Shame I'm not even close enough to you guys to flog it for breaking!

Put a lot of work in recently to get it back on the road after it being a non-runner for a long time due to sele pump going. A pitty because other than this hasn't put a foot wrong and seemed a great little runner. Still, got a lot of jobs done on it I'd never done before so a good learning experience at least!

Aren't you going to fix it?

I would have a go of stripping the engine and overhauling it, but I don't have a garage. Wouldn't fancy stripping an engine outside, especially at this time of year!:(

A reconditioned engine would cost about the same the car is worth and if I bought another engine not reconditioned who is to say it wont end up having problems as well.
