I'm going on a Cloverleaf Club track day at Knockhill on 23 Sept. Do I really need insurance for this? I can't really see anyone behaving like prats on this. If so, where is the best place to go.

Dont know of anyone but i think i would insure it as you never know what could happen, if your anything like me if you dont do it something will happen but if you do insure for the day nothing will happen, thats how my luck seems to be anyway

The cost is quite high, usually with a big excess.

The consensus at the CL trackday at Oulton was that it wasn't worth paying for. As you say, you aren't going to be going crazy, you all sign disclaimers so the worst scenario is binning your bella. Just so long as you remember you aren't trying to set a new lap record and you are all there for enjoyment it should be OK.

But if in any doubt it is clearly better to have it. Read the terms carefully though. A quick google will find plenty of trackday specialist insurers.

That's a lot for a day and the Ts & Cs probably don't cover damage to anyone else's property.

It's a tough call but most seem to pass on it from what I heard.

Dan,

While everyone's personal quote will be different according to car, value, age etc it would be helpful if you could post some typical track day insurance costs so everyone reading gets a rough idea which will inform a wider audience than the individual PM's? It might ultimately lead to greater take up if members think it is fair value.

Hi mate,

I was at Castle Combe last weekend and had track day insurance for about £100 from www.moris.co.uk, excess is £1000 or so. I drive a 2007 Gt. Excess is generally around £1k for cars worth less than £25k I think. This inculudes crashing and if your car catches fire and "burns up".

During the day there were 3 crashes or accidents:

1. A Caterham lost wheel arch...dont know what he hit
2. A Z3 roadster went into a marshalls observation concrete post "sidways", having spun off the road, impact at about 30 mph (that will cost more than a few quid to sort).
3. Something else....didnt see just saw the red flag and the ambulance go out.

Whilst you may not crash/hit anything you could have a problem if someone spins infront of you, hits you or you swerve to avoid and end up in the tyre wall sideways etc. (check you tube castle combe clips). This can happen whatever you drive.

Depends how much your car is worth and how deep your pockets I suppose (for repair work).

Cheers,

hafs

Flux called with a quote yesterday. £117 with £1500 Excess. In the email I got from them a few weeks back said that they provide track cover from £63. This must be for an 80 year old in a Nissan Micra on an empty track.

Cloverleaf days are low risk. Not impressed AF!!!!

That was what I was talking about. Short of a total write off it is worthless cover.

There is, of course, the risk of a total write off.

Yep, certainly looks that way. I thought that Flux would cut us some slack as being the official AO insurer & me being a current customer.

I have been a spectator at a number of track days (Alfa & others) and in general I have never seen anything that would not want me to take my car on track.

Cloverleaf days must be one of the lowest risks as we are not out to wreck our cars. Hot hatch days on the other hand..........

Over to you Dan, what's your thoughts?

Thanks

Dear Richard,

Firstly many thanks for responding to our email regarding Track Day cover that we can offer existing policyholders.

In response to your question we feel the premium quoted reflects the value of your own Alfa - which we have as £19K. As you can see from those 'mock' quotations provided these are all based on car values far less than your own (in many cases more than half the value).

I hope that this is accepable and if you wished to discuss further please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards

Dan

You just can’t go wrong at those price they all seem very good value. For the peace of mind it is worth every penny.
If I am going to go and do a track day I am going to push my bella to the maximum of my ability (I hope not beyond lol) as are others on track so accidents are going to happen.

The motorsport teams and driver that want insurance for a test day are having to pay over 6 times that amount and probably for less track time so the price above in comparison are very good.

Assuming you dont have insurance what do you do if someone else also without insurance crashes into you? Do you/can sue them? Or have you signed away all rights in the T&Cs. A small bump may be Ok but what about something more serious or personal injury?
