Hi alfa people.

So nearly two years ago I bought my first Alfa. A 99 model 156 2litre twin spark. Cream leather interior and wooden steering wheel, a million miles on the clock (134.000) and black with a couple of scratches. I love it. It was only £850. I couldn't believe anyone could buy this much joy for so little money. I guess by now you have an idea about me, and in part you're right - but I've leaned a lot about the car in this time - and shelled out probably three times that much in keeping it running. Alas it's time to probably say goodbye and not be sentimental. The car has developed another expensive sound in the engine dept.

Here's a potted history of the work my independant Alfa specialist has completed starting some months after purchasing the car in North Shields. I live in Middlesbrough and my mechanic is Stockton based.

An oil leak from the sump area which led to a new sump having to be fitted. The original plug was beyond any kind of fix - whilst diagnosing this extra work was required including spark plugs and timing belt. Big End Bearings.. This work was extensive and cost as much as the car. I wouldv'e hoped that was the end of the big bills but..

some months later the oil pump failed and was replaced. Along with the engine. And clutch. The engine was reconditioned with a 6 month warranty.

-- within the last year I got it through it's first MOT ( the one it came with must've been a work of fiction), It's had replacement Exhaust, suspension and front headlights and tyres. At least now I knew it was road legal and safe.

During the summer, the car stalled in town and wouldn't start because my alternator is not working at a hundred percent. (it had previously got wet going through a large flood and started whining). The pick up guy came out and confirmed what I'd suspected: there was a tapping/knocking sound that I 'd felt/ heard the minutes before the breakdown. So now I have more possible expensive engine work to add to the alternator. Reality had to kick in at some point and now I'm faced with selling the car i love because of credit card debt.

I was quoted £900 or so for replacement coils - the apparent source of the new engine noise tap. Heartbreaking. I'd love for this story to have been different from my initial fear two years back, when I was excited and scared of becoming an alfa cautionary tale. It has been the best car Iv'e owned however. I would do it again. Some lessons just have to be learned.

Does anyone have any recommendations for someone in my position? From what Iv'e read before dozens of times I'm expecting the only realistic response; to sell for parts/scrap. This would kill me but I'd welcome some free advice. I'm sure a lot of you have a similar story.

I wonder what my next car will be...?

ummm you have had all the big work done, i'd say keep it...... £900 for coilpacks? do you need 8 of them? fitting coil packs are a DIY job (not that i've done it because i have had diesels for years), but you have new Exhaust-suspension-engine-clutch ect nearly a new car!

......get yourself the 2003 pre facelift 156...it's got a facelifted interior....and everything is just fresh inside.

People will disagree..and perhaps they're right....but as much as i loved our first 156...she needed to go...but i'll never forget her !!! :(

Work out the minimum you could spend for the coil packs. If only a few hundred then keep the car. If not then sell and you could probably pick up a good one for not too much if you take your time searching. Good luck!

Nine hundred quid?!

I got a used Bosch coil pack (JTS) for I dunno, £40? It came to £100 with four new spark plugs and labour. I only didn't do it myself because I didn't know how easy it was / whether anything else was up.

Agree that £900 for coil packs is stupid....I, and I'm sure Autolusso and other guys on here could supply them for a tiny fraction of that price....

Driving through a flood is never a good idea, though...modern car electrics don't like it!

As others have said a set coils can be found very cheap - £50 or less on ebay and a doddle to replace.

But I have never heard of a knocking/tapping noise caused by coils.

So I would check the diagnosis...

If there was water in the plug wells that would cuase a missfire and maybe some vibration
which might cause knocking...

If you charge the battery you should be able to run the engine for a bit to test without replacing the alternator.

Thanks guys - really appreciate the advice..

Some additional info.:

A week or so before the breakdown, after being so scared of running the car low on oil - I may have filled her up a little too much. The dipstick is never that accurate on this car and it had been a couple of weeks since the last check, so i put in a litre of oil. The stick then read quite high - above max. Not being an every day driver I may have just given it a couple of local runs out before the breakdown/badnews happened. My mechanic had the car for a few days (a couple of months ago) and did change the diagnosis - on the phone it was piston slap: possible cheap fix with an engine additive. This then turned to coils (and probably more to be honest, memory fails me). I may have to get a second opinion on the engine, I know.

** before putting a litre I checked thrice to make sure i was getting as accurate a possible reading on the dipstick. It was low - towards minimum as far as i could tell. Did I put too much in? What kind of damage, if any could this do? I seem to get conflicting info from various sources.

Cheers again for all help - I am looking to sell, as much as I'd like to keep.. not practical at this stage.

Thanks for all the help guys - not been on here in a while so apologies, I am gratefull.

Checking Ebay and the like - It looks like I'll really only get peanuts for a 156 with issues. Ah well.

Parts/scrappage it is.

do you need 8 of them?
There are only 4 .. one per pair of plugs (unless it's a JTS, then one per plug! ;) )

It's the usual story .. garage sees Alfa and thinks "woohoo" .. we can make some money here
