I have received mixed info on when to replace the timing belt for mia Mito 1.4TB. Since theere are only less than 25 odd numbers of Mito in Malaysia, the service centre also seemed unsure themselves.

I was informed by them that it needs replacement at 40k KM. But the service manual says to check it at 60k KM and Replace toothed timing drive belt at 120k KM.

Since my milegae has been 47k KM, am a bit worried here.

Appreciate your experience and thoughts.

Your manual/handbook was wriiten by the manufacturer, they know best, any other opinion is just hear say. So stick to what the manufacturer advises. Plus I do not think it is too dusty, like a desert where you live? So should be normal driving conditions (only in abnormal driving does the manual recommend extra checks - as I say go by the manufacturer recommendations)

Manual says 4 years if you do short journeys or the car is left to idle alot, 5 year for more pro longed use/journeys or 60,000 miles whatever comes first!

I'd personally go for the whole hog when changing it like: cam belt, pulley and tensioner kit. Then water pump aswell whilst that is being done. I'm sure we'll hear more soon from other owners when the 08/58 regs come across this marker next year.

Change it every 4 years regardless of the mileage unless you do 120k km in less that 4 years.

Always change the tensioner, since it's relatively cheap compared to the labour of taking the belts off and putting new ones on and it does have an important job to do.

Water pump - some people say change it every time you change the cam-belt.. but I'd go every other change.. but you'll have the benefit of other people's experiences on this engine by the time you need to worry about it.

Finally had the timing belt changed at 50,000 km. The Alfa mechanic here recommended as such due to the driving condition which is always jammed,..took his advice as don't want to be stuck with other issues later on,..

posting on behalf of my mother in law!

Her Mito 1.4 TB Veloce will be 3 years old in July - she has just received a letter from the dealer saying it is due a cam belt replacement! The car has done about 16,000 miles, used mainly round town and has had annual oil and filter change.

Has something changed as I thought it was due at 4 years old? Or is the letter wrong?

The manual says 120k km or every 5 years (4 if only short journeys which it sounds like your MiL car falls into) unless its changed, but then im sure we would know about it.

I suspect its the stealers taking the michael like they do with the your car is due a service after 1 year letters.

EDIT

Yep checked latest version of the manual and its still 120k km/72k miles or every 4/5 years.
