I'm considering buying the above car and wondered if there was anything specific to look out for when test driving & viewing.

Any hints/tips are appreciated.

Thanks

hi..

check the door straps...ie open and close the doors..make sure they are silent...if they are noisy they need replacing.
check the window switches are operational and also the physical switch is not broken
check the under tray is not mullared.
lift off the top engine cover and check, with a torch, that there is no oil around the plugs. and check the foot long bar, that is hidden under the plugs, is not un attached. very expensive job if it is un attached.
check for water in the boot
check the aircon works and cools .
listen for squeaky suspension...ie get in and out of the car a few times, and when driving, listen as you go over any speed bump .

Knocking/squeaking suspension (mainly front)
Heavy/slipping clutch (accelerate hard in 4th from 1500 rpm). Probably a simple fix but could be a new clutch.
Underbody corrosion
Broken reversing light (due to snapped wire going to switch on gearbox)

The Alfa diesel is a different beast from the petrol so many feel its not a petrol heads car.The engines are good last far longer than a petrol and unlike a petrol dont end up for spares on ebay cos the big ends are knocking. The 147 is a good car with some issues. The wiper arms break away from the linkage and the headlamp adjusters wont adjust. The power steering pipes can leak and so on but these are all faults easily fixed for the diy owner. The bonus of a diesel is fuel economy. The twinspark is very poor by modern day standards, perhaps getting 32 mpg overall some 10 mpg less than many other manufacturers. The diesel on the other hand is good and cheap to tax so you have the best of both worlds a good handling car with a fuel efficient engine.Remapping it will cost around £175 and give you really good mid range performance and probably even better fuel consumption figures up to 55 mpg.The downside is you pay probably considerably more to buy cos they have a good following.

Ive just posted the following elsewhere for someone asking the same question as you so here goes: '1.9 JTDm is a strong engine that if looked after properly will serve you well! Points to look out for are full service history, especially at the cam belt has been changed - they are due at 70k or 5 years, but most people advise that they are done every 4 years or 60k. Along with this, you should check if the water pump has been changed at the same point in time as these tend to be one of the reasons for premature failure of the belt and pump. Another thing to look out for is a very heavy clutch as the mechanism can cause problems.' I hope you find this useful.
