When the swirl flaps went in my 1.9td I had the inlet manifold and top end rebuilt, I had some guidance from a friend who said not to refit the swirl flaps and now the engine will start but if I stop before its warmed up it refuses to start again. Is there anything that can be done or will I have to bite the bullet and have a new inlet manifold fitted?

Your friend was right. It definitely won't be lack of flaps messing up starting.

Mine are deleted (after a few bent valves etc - see avatar) and EGR blanked, it starts easily hot or cold.

The early 1.9 JTD engines never came with swirl flaps, so the lack of them in your car isn't directly causing the problem..

You are spoiled for choice as to why it's not warm-starting. Defective temp sensor, crank position sensor or MAP sensor. EGR sticking. MAF failing. Reading codes should give some guidance.

Unable to start from warm is usually the crank sensor .. but get the codes checked as ALFADOIT suggests before you waste money changing something you don't need too ..
