'57 2.4jtdm been running fine for ages. About 2 months ago I thought I heard something associated with my clutch release bearing, then all quiet again.

Now I have suddenly got an almighty clatter coming from the clutch /gearbox area BUT only under the following situation: when clutch pedal somewhere between 25 and 75% of travel. With pedal up no noise, pedal fully down no noise! Pedal in between there is an awful noise. Like mechanical rattling.

Mostly audible at tickover, higher revs the engine drowns it out. Can be heard in the cabin. No change to gear changing ability, hear nothing abonormal in gear with pedal up at any speed in any gear. no clutch slip either.

Initially I thought it must be a problem with thrust bearing but would expect that to be silent when no load and noisey when under any load with pedal pushed down from about 5% travel.

Anyone come across this before? I am prepared for the worst - I've got used to it having owned alfa for 5 years!

3 exams and as suggested all say DMF or clutch assy. Quotes of £1100 so far.

single componenets at this price requiring replacement at <100k miles is a bit of a pain. thinking whether to just ditch the car and off load it as is as a garage would drop price for trade in at cost of work rather than price.

On drive going no where for now as a noisy is one thing, a burst dmf or whatever could cause a lot more damage I guess. One day when I need to smile I might add up how much this car has cost me!!!:censored:

Unfortunately it's not unique to Alfa by any means, most (all?) manufactures use DMFs with diesels as they do work very well in terms of reducing vibration and harshness when driving - and that matters a lot to magazine reviewers etc who don't have to run them for years and pay the maintenance bills.

So at least take comfort that if you'd bought any other manual-box diesel car, you'd have the same issue anyway!

DMF by the sounds of it. I changed one the other day which had totally **** itself, at only 60,000 miles. On the plus side, at least you've had 100k out of yours. I would be surprised if a garage would take the car as part-ex and only knock the trade in value down by parts cost. But, it depends how much profit they have on the car they are selling I suppose.
