It's time for the return of an old favourite.

In the picture below are six cars plucked from the classifieds in Cars and Car Conversions. The year is 1996. The whole old skool Ford thing has yet to take off.

  1. What I want you to do is guess the price of each car. To help you, the cheapest is £495, the most expensive is £6250.

I'm not going to put the prices against the cars, but my Mum used to have a TR7 convertible!!

More importantly I'd have that mini right now!! 1440 engine, 13 inch Minilites and an RC40 exhaust! :p

Could have sworn I'd already posted an answer to this. I'm guessing the Westie is at the top.

It's a good answer, it's not quite right. (Different show I know).

High to low
Westfield £6250
BMW £3000
Sierra
Mini £2800
Escort
TR7
Capri £850
Chevette. £495

Sierra, Scrote and TR not in the right place.

Woo - I got the Westie right.

When you consider how simple they are, Caterham-esque kit cars hold their value remarkably.

What on God's green earth is a BMW 700 CS? I just googled it and I still don't recognize it. But I can see a convertible one for sale at 30k GBP though.....

Never come across one before.

A fairly boggo saloon can be bought today for <10k so 3k for one 25 years ago would suggest they aren't massively desirable.

Correct. £850 for a 2.8 injection that's a functioning car.

I believe the little BMW is what they made after microcars but before Neue Klasse.

I always thought the Chevette deserved more than a wheezy old pushrod motor from the days of the arc. It was quite neatly styled and had way better suspension than an Escort. It seems a bit odd having a homologation special but no lesser but non-sporty version to sell.

Stop doing this to me Keithyboy, always wanted a mini pickup!! Had grand plans to "customise" it. (Please bear in mind this would have been the 90's and I was a lot younger then!)

Think BMW are missing a trick in not reviving the Mini pick up on the Countryman chassis. The Newquay/California surfer crowd would go for it in a big way. My imagination is thinking a JCW Works version!

Continuing my theme of largely ignoring the question you're actually asking, I'm going to plump for the Lotus as the most expensive and ignore all the others.

Although surely that cardboard box with a V8 has to be at the cheap end?

The Lotus isn't the most expensive and the grasser isn't the cheapest.
