And look a lot classier, and be in something a lot more luxurious. To be honest, the speed isn't so important to me as long as it's decent.

Put it this way. If I had ÂŁ80k to spend, and could get this:

or this:

I wouldn't even glance at the Audi on my way past. It's probably quicker, it undoubtedly handles better, it's generally thought of as good looking (although this is the failure in my analogy, because I don't much like them) but it terms of class? It's not in the same league.

Hmm... dunno about that.

I'm not about to slag the Focus RS off, but I'd rather a Fiat Coupe than an RS for much the same reasons as I'd prefer my GTA to an RS.
In fact, for what I want from a car, the RS doesn't get close to either of them.

That your preferences do not match theirs does not mean they are 'either mentally slow or just have their heads stuck in their ar$e.'
But the reasons they are stating they dont want the RS is because it is slower than a chipped Coupe 0-60 or that it is not a good car. How can a brand new RS produced car not be good? It has to at least be a good car. They are just slating it for the sake of it. I do not believe that everyone should love it or they are retarded but to slate it for no real reason only leaves jealousy or head up ar$e syndrome. The main reason I presume to not like it is its looks. In fact surely that can be the only reason?

Well said Bazza.

I think the Gist of it was that for a 300bhp car it was suprisingly slow, and that a standard 220bhp coupe gives similar straight line speed for 1/10th of the price.

Of course they would swap a coupe for an RS, it is worth more and is newer. But would you not be dissapointed to buy a new car for all that money and find it is no faster than your old one?

The Focus does sound almost exactly like a coupe BTW, I heard one the other day. ;)
and thats why i aint bought one yet (if indeed i ever will). to go as quick, you dont need to spend that amount of coin and if you look second hand, you can go far far faster with the ÂŁ27k
Why are you all driving alfa's if straight line speed is the biggest issue? Surely it is the driving experience that makes a car. If the RS is one of the most involving cars to drive then you should be saying that it is a great car for 27K when an M3 costs 50K+.

I dont think ÂŁ27k is bad for what you get I really dont

as i said before, Impreza or Evo. just as quick, just as vulgar but more competent around the twisties. or if you go secondhand then the choices are almost limitless. 911 Turbo for instance?

i mean come on, as nice and powerful as the Focus RS is, it couldnt even beat a less powerful Megane around the TG track

What I like about this particular car, is that it pushed up the hp barrier - and now everyone has to follow. Golf has (270hp in the 2L version, and probably 340hp in the future if the use the Audi TTRS 2,5 engine, but that's going to be 4WD for sure). Megane RS (250hp) looks slow, and it's not even launched yet. OK, there is a limit on what FWD can handle, but then again some years ago we believed that this was around 230hp. I want to see what's next. The top Milano FWD version is rumored to have around 270hp (1.75 twin turbo).

On Focus RS: A bit after market-ish, but not bad overall

Actually, I wish I hadn't done that bit of research? Anyone got ÂŁ27k they can lend me? I really want that TVR

But again Bazza this is YOUR opinion. The Focus RS is a brand new car with new technology that makes the GT cars you are looking at seem a bit boring to me. And lets not forget the Megane R26-R has plastic windows. this is not a car for realistic everyday use. It only has 2 seats and is as harsh to ride in as a cart. The Fucus is a damn fine piece of engineering from Ford. I would much rather have a 156 GTA than an EVO or Scooby but does this make it better? As a car it is not close to the tech in one of the rice boxes but for what it does for you is a different matter. From what I have read the RS is a car that you would enjoy driving round town and then blast round a track with the best of them. I can only dream of buying a 27K car so all I can go on is reviews but as Gaz says he can afford one and has driven one but will not be buying and this is down to a matter of taste because surely we are all agreed that it is a great car.

Alphant your argument is slightly flawed.

Everyone has a different take as to what a 'good car' is. I personally think my GT is a good car (even if it breaks ) many would agree. However, many would disagree so it would deppend on what side of the fence your on as to wether it truely is a good car.

When my alfa is fixed I'm going to book a test drive in one of these (finally!!) so I can distinguish for myself if it's a good car or not. Magazine reviews mean nothing to me (I've never bought an automotive magazine for that reason) so I'm reserving judgement untill I've got behind the wheel.

But if I'm honest, they don't look as good in the metal as on pictures.

Ford RS

I used to like Fords until I owned one. Memories of beefy V6 mk2 Granadas and mk2 Escorts led me to purchase a 1993 Ford Orion during university.
If you think Alfa reliability is bad, this thing put anything to shame. Wasn't so much built as thrown together in a hurry before going down the pub.

My Ford Zodiac was simply awful from new - SIMPLY THROWN TOGETHER AFTER RETURNING FROM THE PUB, the proof was bits kept falling off.

But again Bazza this is YOUR opinion.
But that's exactly my point.

I never labelled anyone for liking it - you labelled a group of people for not liking it. Now I know you've explained your reason for that, and I kind of understand (although I haven't bothered to read their reasons for dislike myself) but you do seem to be trying to switch sides of the table with me with that comment!

Although - I wouldn't want to paint myself as above reproach here - I would quite probably label someone for liking it more than a TVR or a Maserati! :cheese:

As much as this will make it appear that I'm being a narrow-minded badge snob, because I struggle to explain it, I'll have a go here.
It is a Focus. Yes, it is one which - in performance terms - has been fettled magnificently. But it is still a Focus.
Which means it is a car designed and built to a (low) price, to be a budget workhorse of a car. There's a certain indefinable (by me at least) quality of 'specialness' that it can never have. You're going to walk away from it in a car park, glance back - and see a Focus. A rather garish one, but still a focus. And you're going to sit in it, and be surrounded by an interior largely similar to that in a budget shopping trolley of a car.*
As stated before, performance is largely immaterial to me. What then does a Focus RS offer?

*Actually, I'm a bit worried that the GTA, and the Coupe before it, both with highly individual and sculpted interiors (especially the dashes) have somewhat ruined my ability to get on with a car which has a crappy interior. Luckily, my next port of call for a car is intended to be a TVR, and their interiors are works of art, so I should be OK for the foreseeable.

1.performance is largely immaterial to me
2. What then does a Focus RS offer?.
1. Says the man with a GTA.

2. This is a valid point if performance is not something that you are looking for as a must have and it is just nice if it comes with it then the RS is something that you will deffo not be looking for. As you say it is just a Fucus. Well I dont completely agree with this statment but for arguments sake it is correct for 90% of the car.

What I did is read the reviews / opinions on the Fiat forum and then wrote my very own piece of Fiat Forum-ness. It is hard on these forums to not sound like you are saying if you do not agree with me then you are wrong. It was stated with some jest and I completely see that the RS is not a car for everyone (most actually).

As for your non obsession with speed, a GTA currently and hankering for a TVR - maybe someone in denial? :)
