Swirl Valve Fault Code on 159

 Just had to put my 3 month old 159 2.4 JTDm in for repair after the engine warning came on.

According to Medway Autos in Rainham, Kent, (who were very helpful, by the way) the P2018 fault code neccesitated the replacement of a 'swirl valve' and is an acknowledged issue that Alfa are aware of.

That was three days ago. Today, with the low-fuel light having been on for half-an-hour or so, the same fault light came on again (not when driving, after having parked for an hour). Initially there was a lack of power as the engine stayed in nice, safe economy mode. Then having filled up with diesel, firstly the power returned, then starting it again, the fault light stayed off.

Could it be that the diesel injection system doesn't like the fact that the tank is almost empty and that the fuel pump may be struggling to draw fuel up at the required pressure for the initial start-up???

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks for that!:)

I'll check with Medway Autos whether they know about adjusting the ECU.
The really tough bit is going to be telling my wife that she was right to suggest the link between low fuel and the engine fault warning! Serves me right for sneering at her 'girly' suggestion. I guess we know who's the better mechanic!

Ig

If it keeps losing power and the warning lights come on, switch it off and then restart it. When mine did this, I needed to do this 4 or 5 times on my first 159 to 'reset' the valve and thus switch out the warning lights. Its not ideal, but at least it'll get you home without limping in safe mode.

Thanks

I'm not sure if the software was updated, but the problem definately turned out to be the tolerances on the inlet manifold openings - being fractionally too tight they trapped the inlet vanes when the engine cooled, this explained why the fault light came on only when I started the car from cool and never when the engine was warm!
