Bought my wife a 147 1.9jtd 115bhp had it a few months and now getting quite bad clutch slip. I'm planning on getting it remapped, so my wife asked me if I'd be able to change the gearbox to a 6 speed? So wanting to know my options and any advice and any thing else I'd need to change if I go ahead and change the gearbox when I change the clutch?

This talks more about the 2.4 5 speed, upgrade to 1.9 6 speed, the 2.4 10V use the same box as the 1.9 8V:
All of them use the same casings, only internals differ

Speedy210 - you need a better clutch to sort out clutch slip - the new gearbox wont help

Do they all come with the DMF?

I wouldn't really bother.....In normal use in my 1.9 16v I only use 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th gears - sometimes 4thas a "braking" gear on downhill stretches. The rev range of useful torque from sub 1500 revs to around 4000 means that 5th is almost useless unless you are absolutely ringing the last ounce out of acceleration at speeds well in excess of our UK limits ;)

Would the 6th gear bring the rev's down, or is the final ratio the same as a five speed? If the final ratio is the same I wouldn't bother, especially after a re-map. If it brings the rev's down at cruising speeds, then good idea. I know on the GTV's the 6 speed is a close ratio box, rather than longer legged. Not sure on the 147 diesels....

I don't know the ratios, but it's not a CR box. 1st is insanely low, for pulling away up a 1:4 hill with passengers. 70mph in 6th is about 2,100rpm, which is relaxed, but it's not an overdrive gear - the car will pull fine from 60 up to 3months in gaol speeds.

EDIT: I found these on another forum
Alfa 147 150JTD M-Jet,
3.8:1 first gear ratio,
2.235:1 second gear ratio,
1.36:1 third gear ratio,
0.971:1 fourth gear ratio,
0.763:1 fifth gear ratio,
0.614:1 sixth gear ratio

3.545:1 reverse gear ratio

Final drive unknown.

Hi Speedy
At the risk of being labeled sexist. what sort of driving does your wife mostly do. Shops and school run will not really benefit from the sixth gear as I hardly get mine into 5th around town. but if your wife's the North of England sales rep for Max Factor or similar then she will certainly feel the benefit.

Hello, I'm trying to revive this post, maybe it won't need a new thread...

I'm currently thinking about doing the same thing with my 2007 Alfa 147 1.9 JTDm 8V 120 PS. I don't want to re-map it but I believe at least one bearing on the differntial side of the drive shaft has failed and I also wanted to put in a new clutch kit including a brand new flywheel soon. As I've thought about doing this swap before this would be the right occasion.
So as I understand (getting my information from this post and pictures on the internet) the housings are (almost) identical and should fit. I still have some questions though. Mainly concerning the externals.

On some pictures it looks like this gearbox was also sold with different external fittings. Are there differences like hydraulic vs electronic functions of gear shifting and clutch pressing? And how does it work with the gear shift? Do I need a different shifting cable or gear lever setup? What happens to the reverse gear, which on my 8V JTD is controlled by a springloaded button under the knob to push up. If certain parts like for example the bellhousing externals don't fit, could I just swap it with my original (5 gear) one? The differential at least is not interchangeable as I also understand from this thread.

I hope someone can help me out with this.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Dusseldorfalfista. Did you do the 6 speed upgrade, because I want to carry out the exact same conversion? Any help or tips would greatly appreciated.
