There was a time when the use of superlatives was limited to genuine instances that deserved them.

Examples:-

Awesome\awe - used to be:- "The volcano exploded with spectacular force and I was filled with awe". Now - here is a photo of a cupcake/fluffy kitten/breakfast it is awesome.

Amazing - used to be:- "The firefighters worked through the night in appalling conditions. They saved 100 lives with no injuries to themselves. It was amazing. Now - "here is a photo of a cupcake/fluffy kitten/breakfast, it is amazing".

Passion - used to be:- "I am passionate about plight of the oppressed/starving/war refugees"
Now - "I am passionate about photos of cupcakes/fluffy kittens/breakfasts".

Whatever happened to thinking things were nice, liking things and quite enjoying things?

It would be literally stupendous if anyone replies to this.

I agree with you Paul, especially with 'amazing'. I loath the way that word is thrown around to describe everything.

Equally annoying is the over-use of gorgeous and beautiful. It all becomes meaningless when abused.
