I would respectfully like to request that the Way Off Topic lounge be made available to all visitors of the fourm (including unregistered visitors), and the Image lounge be made available to all registered members (including those on the free membership).

The reasons I would like to see this are as follows:

1. The WOT lounge is a real success story for AO, and a big part of the reason we attract (and keep) so many new members. Any internet forum lives or dies on being able to attract new membership. Without WOT, I don't think there is enough content to keep a significant portion of the "casual" visitors interested enough to keep returning. Without this, they will not sign up and the forum will decline.

2. We also need to keep our existing members, whether or not they choose to pay for club membership. I think restricting them from accessing the WOT lounge is detrimental and we risk losing some very valued friends. It is my belief that we should not take anything away from existing members.

3. If we restrict the WOT lounge, all that will happen is that we will start getting more Off Topic threads appearing in the General Alfa or Tech lounges.

4. I think we need to keep the Image lounge on the same footing we had before - i.e. restricted for un-registered visitors, but open to all registered members. This will eliminate the copyright issues that some people have quite rightly pointed out, and also maintain more interest for our existing members.

5. Even if we make the above changes, I still think that the package that Ian & Co have put together for club membership has enough interest to justify a charge and will still attract subscribers. We have to remember that the club is still in it's infancy, and as it matures I'm sure there will be many more benefits on offer to justify the price.

I genuinely believe that most people who have already subscribed did not do so for the "added benefits" of club membership, but did so in order to thank Ian and the team for what we all agree is one of the best forums out there, and to put something back into it. I know that is the reason I signed up.

As the club develops, I'm sure the income will be used to provide a package with some real benefits and attractions. This will then attract new club members in its own right, without relying on the loyalty of long-standing members.

I do not wish to undermine the work and effort that Ian and the team have put into AO and the new club, and I would like to thank them for providing us with such a brilliant resource for help and entertainment. However, I do sincerely think that my suggestions would help ease the transition to the new club and (hopefully) improve our long-term prospects.

Thank you for listening. :)

(I hope this was the right place for this suggestion )

I agree! If it hadn't been for this site, I wouldn't have known about a lot of things esp. the cambelt issues. I think £25 is a small price to pay for potentially saving thousands. Thank you - all of you - very much.

I agree that the AO site might be doing itself a big favour if it opens up WOT to all members; although I have to say I'm not so sure about the Images lounge

How about, if the lounge is not be be made public, why not have an open day once a week so newbies can see what's going on, then they might want to join in, at the minute any newbies will never know what it's like unless they suscribe.:)

GC I think you have some very interesting suggestions.

I too had a concern that there would be too few members in the WOT to make it interesting.

Same view on the members payment as well ;)

GC you have my unequivocal support in this. Well said.:)

There are problem areas in the new structure, I think but this one change (the WOT loungething) would do a great deal to keep the community together.

Also completely agree with your other points and your perspective on them.

Don't see why the WOT is for club members only myself - there must have been some reason I guess but as I posted before give it time - I am sure these changes aren't set in stone and all things will be considered :)

I suppose the reason is that the two lounges are likely to use the largest amount of bandwidth. I'm not bothered either way to be honest, although I certainly see GC's point.

I support this too. I don't see why forums should be locked.

What is wrong with our current 'Prospect'

Nothing, I hope!!!

What I was trying to drive at was that the WOT lounge is one of our best chances of generating return visits from unregistered visitors, who in turn may become registered members, who in time may become club members, who will then contribute financially to the site, and so help improve the site for everyone in the future!

Sorry, I know what I mean...... I just have difficulty articulating it sometimes :(

The other angle is: there needs to be a reasonable advantage to being a member, if every lounge is accessible to all, where is the incentive to pay? For myself and several others, an incentive isn't needed, I'm glad to be helping the forum, but how many is that true for?
Eventually, hopefully, there will be other more tangible advantages, but at the moment?

A difficult one.

I have stated elsewhere that I joined AO to ask a tech question. I joined Sportsalfa (then GTV6.com) at the same time. Initially I "preferred" GTV6 and posted over 300 items there - all car related. I did, however, enjoy reading stuff in the AO WOT lounge although it did seem a bit daunting to a newby. Gradually - once I started to get used to the personalities there I dipped my toe into it and made the odd post here and there. Over time I felt at home there and drifted away from Sportsalfa - mainly because there is far less variety there (no WOT, polls, rant room etc).

So what am I saying? - probably without access to the WOT lounge I would not have got to know the site and stayed on. I would hate to think that there might be newbies who, unlike myself, might miss a chance to become a convert.

Paul.

I have to say Paul, the same is probably true of me. I never got into the off topic side of the Fiat Coupe forum, and as a result posted maybe 50 times there in my 2 years as a Coupe owner.
After initial trepidation I did get involved here, and look at my embarrassing post count as a consequence. :D

If WOT gets opened up, can we have a VIP sanctuary then ;) WOT is a sane area at the moment
