Hi All,

Forgive me if this has already been answered. I've spent the morning searching this forum and a few others, while I can find similar problems elsewhere I cannot find anything quite like this.

While driving to work this morning something odd happened. When I pressed the clutch pedal down something must have broke because the clutch went from quite stiff to quite loose. I.e. it suddenly got a hell of a lot easier to press. While the clutch still works I now also have a vibration coming through the pedal that wasn't there on the previous press. The other pedals are unaffected and I don't feel the vibration on any other part of the car. I had no problems finishing my journey to work and I've been out at lunchtime had no problems.

Obviously something has happened, my questions is this, where would be the best place to start looking to find out what changed/broke.

Any advice or links would be much apprecated.

TIA

Start by looking on the drive for fluid first !!

Maybe the little vibration damper thing in the hydraulic circuit has burst/broken ... might explain the vibration.

The Vibration could Broken Dual mass flywheel.

Is there a pulsing on the clutch pedal when it is depressed slightly, and does the engine not feel totally smooth at tickover?

Failure of these is quite common, and some manufacturers are starting to go back to solid flywheels.

Hi All,

Thanks for the quick and helpful responses.

@symon, I've described this as a vibration in the clutch pedal. But yes as pulse would also be a good description and I do feel it when applying light pressure to the clutch. But the engine is ticking over fine. Do you happen to know if the DMF would break suddenly and would this affect the tension on clutch pedal?

@rossogtv, There are no obvious signs of leaks, which resovoir feeds the clutch? I'll see if I'm loosing fluid.

Looks like a trip to the garage is going to be necessary. I prefer to at least have some idea myself of any problems before asking the garage. I had the thermostat replaced last week after reading about other owner's problems with the car not heating up.

Thanks again.

pulsing at pedal usually indicates too much end float ..imagine a buckled wheel on your bicycle and squeezing brake lever

The dual mass flywheel can break internally. Often it happens if the clutch has been slipping, or if the driver sits on the clutch in traffic.

I wouldn't like to say it has gone for sure, but to me it does sound like it could have failed. Or has stated to fail.

I would get an Alfa specialist to have a look.

Hi All,

I just wanted to update this problem and thank everyone for their help.

Yes, it turned out to be a broken DMF. The dealer from whom purchased the car agreed to replace the DMF under warranty. I followed other suggestions and paid them to fit a new clutch at the same time. So £200 poorer and my lovely 156 has a new DMF and clutch. And what a difference it has made.

FWIW the dealer was Lowerdale Autos in Barnsley, who never complained or argued and just got on with it. My thanks to them too . They put the old parts in the boot to show me they had replaced them.

Cheers,

Always good to hear when a problem is sorted by a dealer. Good for you, hope you are enjoying the new clutch and DMF!
