It's not just UK import cars that it's an issue on unfortunately, it's also an issue on some of the Irish cars.

Some owners are sourcing spare subframes & treating/repairing them in advance then swapping them over themselves or getting a garage to do it. This thread in the 159 Tech Lounge is worth a look if you are interested http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-159-brera-and-946-spider/544066-159-rusty-sub-frame.html There's a good few others if you do a search.

Didn't any of this come under the anti-corrosion warranty or was this just body work related ??

I phoned FIat \ Alfa R today > to enquire re warranty ... seems you need to take it to dealership first so they can inspect it .. ( at a cost) then they decide if warranty or not "depending on how bad it is"

Sounds like it's worth a try, good luck, there have been some successful claims.

Ouch! rusty frames.... Yes I've repaired the frames on both our 159s. It's pointless buying a new one for €1000 as the paint from the facotry is rubbish...

I took mine and had them sand basted and 'touched up' a few bad welds... Cleaned, coated with 3 coats of Galvafroid:

Zinc Rich Galvanising Coating - Galvafroid - ParkerTools

Then spray painted silver for the 'bling bling'.. :)

Here is what I had before:

After sand blasting:

Galvafroid drying in garage:

And finally the treated frame going back on car:

Costs....

Well the sandblasting is around the €150 mark.
Galvafroid was €60 for tin which with do 1.5 frames.. yes one and a half!
New Radiator support brackets were I think €80-ish (they will be rotten as well)

then you have mechanic labour on top.. steering frame and suspension needs to come out.. I would consider this job as part of a complete front suspension upgrade/replacement.

I've one spare treated frame if you're stuck? can post up detailed photos if you wish?
