Street food must surely be food that you eat in the street? To me this means chips & gravy, kebabs, Gregg’s pasties, and other foods of that ilk. It doesn’t not include borderline inedible ****e that resembles what they apparently (but most likely don't) eat in Vietnam/Armenia/Palestine that you eat in a ****ing restaurant. If you go in, order food, and sit at a table eating it, it’s a restaurant, it is not street food whatever sort of pretentious tosspot the seller might be. Even McDonalds, whose food is often eaten (and subsequently chucked up) in the street, don’t call it street food.

Maccy D's call 'em a Restaraunt so they must be. Street food is sold by a vendor from a temporary location/structure (usually so they can dodge irate poisoned customers and tax officials). Chips are not street food as they come from a chip shop, premises intended for the retail of foodstuffs. Likewise with Greggs, kebab shops etc.

I beg to differ. Our saturday market has a good selection of Asian/African/Indian street food. Yes, you can eat it out of the box in the street. It is far better than the grease soaked rubbish from the lardy takeaways. Also, one doesn't have such vile concoctions as chips and gravy in the same container and walk through the street eating it surely??

A test was recently carried out on real "street food" in Mumbai. Various food was purchased from different vendors, one of them very near a bus station, and the results were alarming! Yes, they had less bacterial content than foods bought in British takeaways. The Indian steet food was clear of any bacterial content. I must try and find the link.

Shops are located in streets. If they sell food then that food is food you bought in that street hence street food.

Some such shops are located in roads so they sell road food - not to be confused with roadkill which, granted, can sometimes be more hygienic and nutritious than your average street/road food.

We have a newsagents, run by a Chinese couple, it's also a delicatessen AND they sell "speciality"? spicy noodles cooked to order. It's on a school route and the kids love them.
