Hi fairly new to this site and only had my GT for a few months.
I have a 04 1.9jtd GT.
Purchased from a mate who has had it since it was 3 months old.
Now at 73k and other than normal routine service items the only thing to go wrong was a drivers heated front seat. - who said they are unreliable.

I'm looking to get a few items done in the very near future.

Suspention need looking at - posible upper wishbones
Clutch - strange slight slip only under hard acceleration in 5th or 6th
Service required in 3k

My real issue is a strong strange smell - like burnt fumes/diesel - more apparent when vehicle is warm and sat in traffic. - it gets into the cabin.

Performance is fine, economy 42-45 short trips, only slight burst of exhaust smoke under hard exceleration.

EGR valve removed cleaned and tested - all working fine.

No oil use in last 3 months.

I can see some feedback on this site but nothing conclusive?

The car is fantastic and never fails to put a smile on my face everytime i drive it.
Any advise on what the problem might be and any advise on where is best to take it.

is it linked to a slipping clutch??

Thanks in advance - Adrian.

Hi,

I have exactly the same issue, oily/fuel smell when heater on and sat in traffic! pull away, smell goes.
One mechanic said high pressure fuel pump leak, but took it to alfa specialist and he said no leak whatsoever.
Have you got any drips on driveway? Any obvious oil leak in engine bay?

Let me know your results, this is interesting!

cheers
Stu

Two options spring to mind

Leak in exhaust... or fuel leak.... I would take engine cover off after a run and look for any damp areas. you may have a small leak. return pipe, rubber pipe that comes off end of pipes that connect top of injectors can wear a little over time. also you can get leak from where top of injector attaches to return pipe (usually just needs a new o-ring). Diesel leak is usually obvious as it doesn't evaporate as quick as petrol and stays damp and oily for longer....

Oh, doubt clutch as a slipping clutch smell is not mistook for anything else.

However is there is a leak of oil onto clutch that could cause slipping but slippage in higher gears is usually the sign of clutch going...

If giving it an Italian tune up improves the clutch it could be oil leaking onto it (would still not expect you to smell it in cabin though so money still on fuel or exhaust leak.
