sounds like you mean the variator noise.

oil gets pumped round it on start up, and it will quiet down once it gets going. not an issue really - small perfomance negative if really bad.

it sounds like a diesel on a cold start if its a bit past its best.

if the noise dies in a few minutes its still good to go for a while.

you need to remove cam to fit a new one so stick it out til next cam change.

cam needs done every 32k miles at most, and an extra £120 or so will fit you a new variator and kill the noise at the same time.

If it's loud it'll be the cat bracket. It will go away when the cat is warmed up.. but it gets worse and worse.... I assume its only audible low in the rev range say 2-3000RPM. I had mine fixed just before Christmas.

A dodgy variator makes the car sound like a diesel on startup as Bpb has mentioned.
