Just looked at buying a 2.0 16v wide body.90k on the clock.Upon starting, the engine sounded like a diesel and i was put off straight away. The engine revved smoothly and there was no smoke. This is the first 16v ive seen, wot do you think the problem is?

Hi Martin

That'll be the variator! Loads and loads of posts on here about it, do a search for the subject, you could use it as a bargaining tool, think the costs is around £200 from a specialist.

How much are they asking for it? 155's tend to be dirt cheap or very overpriced, it might not be worth the hassle!

Hi Martin.
No doubt about that one : Its the cam variator. It's a general problem for the 16v's,but acording to what I'ved heard (most on this site),the problem should have being solved on the new variator's.

About prices for the sparepart's,someone from UK (I prosume you are from UK?) will be much better to help you.But if the cambelt and tensioner (and balance belt+tensioner) hasent being changed,it is defently time now.

Good luck, and just ask again :)

The variator you say is £200.What about fitting,is it a big job?
The cars not in bad shape, the exhaust is blowing somewhere near the front so I will have to account for that will cost as well.
cheers for the quick reply.

Martin

This came up recently and I can only say the £200 was all in (NOT main dealer) but some of the other guys on here have had it done and can be more accurate with prices. Dont think its a big job but most people have the cambelt done at the same time.

If you can give us more details, year, mileage, colour etc we might be able to suggest an appropriate price????

Or perhaps run a book to see who guesses the nearest to the final selling price wink

BTW, I would advise you find out exactly where the exhaust is blowing and get a price for the part, Alfa exhausts are gold plated, well not really but they can be damned expensive for a bit of tubing!!!

The car is a 96' wide body 2.0 T-Spark.Full history,90k covered, cam belt replaced at 60k.It needs a bit of tidying up,but appart from that seems fine.Oh and one lady owner, dont know weather thats good or bad? They are asking £1895 which seems reasonable.
 Any comments welcome.
