Hi everyone would really appreciate some help from the experts on here.
I have an Alfa 156 52 plate 1.8 t spark veloce.
I have noticed last few weeks knocking going over bumps and road imperfections.
So i took it to my garage anticapating it being drop link or upper and lower arm replacement BUT the mechanic checked over all the suspension and found no movement or play in any of the suspension parts.
He seems to think that it could possibly be something to do with the steering rack as when the car is turned off and and stationery if you shake the wheel from side to side you can hear the knock and it sounds and feels like its from the steering
Any advice would be gratefully appreciated !!!!

Thanks
Danny

This has been posted in the 145/146 section so hopefully a moderator will move it to the correct section for you.

I'm not familiar with the 156 other than the suspension wishbone setup on the front is completely different. What might be similar though are the suspension strut top mounts. If they're anything like the 145/146 then the bearing under the top mount eventually disintegrates or the bonded rubbber insert in the top mount breaks away from the metal body of the mount itself. The result is knocking when going over bumps and/or when turning the steering wheel left to right (which sounds exactly like the issue you're describing). The fix is to replace the top mounts.
