What causes this, seems like there has been numerous cases of this on this model. I'm yet to come across a definitive cause of it,

I've just changed the upper wishbone ( which was buggered. To be honest), this solved some of the problem but the clunk still exists.

I know the tie rod end still needs replacing because it's worn, but I can't see all that noise being generated from that.

Worn inner tie rod? Ball joint banging around. Or a steering rack?

Anyone?...

Your subject line says "Steering Clunk" and if you are feeling it through the steering wheel then the rod ends are most likely. If it is a clunk through the body of the car I would start looking at the lower wishbone swivel.
