Ok so since getting the car running again it's had the occasional problem starting. Turn the key and nothing, not a sausage. Every so often you might get a loud clunk from the starter and thats it.

So assumed it was probably a duff starter and picked up a known working but used one. Stuck it on tonight and wired it up and exactly the same thing. Either nothing or a loud clunk ( but mostly nothing at all).

The lights don't dim and the battery has plenty of charge.

Does the 147 have some sort of starter relay? if so where is it? What could be causing it?

Bloody car is doing my head in  had loads of alfa's and never had one this bad

Check the earth strap from battery -> chassis -> engine/gearbox. If you have a multimeter switch it to volts and put one lead on the battery negative terminal the other on the engine/gearbox.

It should read 0 volts, any reading in the meter is the potential difference (volts dropped over the earth strap) and therefore the number of volts not reaching the starter motor.

All the best

The earth straps are connected fine but your right in that it is a bad earth somewhere, the potential difference between the engine and neg side of the battery is 5 volts which is quite a lot considering it should be 0... Ran another earth strap and it runs fine now...

Or it did till it spat all its coolant out on the M65 yesterday...
