.....I strongly suspect that if he could take a picture...he could get it undone.....

My money would be that it's the top inner one. Accessible easily enough with the engine in front of you given the exact right length of socket extender.

You could get away with two as the starter is dowelled in....but it would be better with all 3 in the longer term. Put it this way.....do you ever want to be going back in there to fix it?

Just a thought on my part, as with my Lannie's or was it FIATS, or maybe it was both?? Looooooong 3/8" drive socket extension 'T' bar then ratchet, was the only way to get at em'? But, after removal of the inner wing plastic arch all was easily seen, hence my piccie request? ;) Never removed the starter on the Alfa, but similar layout maybe?

The problem with the V6 is the starter is sandwiched between exhaust manifold and block, plus there is an oil filter housing with assorted sensors and pipes on it, plus for added joy, an alternator. It's basically a pig of a thing to get at at the best of times. You might get a long and convoluted socket assembly in there, but I think you'd need two people to manage it.

Hello Chris, was hoping youd pop by soon for a solution - or not haha, im getting a spanner made up tomorrow, hopefully this will do the trick. what a bugger to do! Its by the worst nut ive ever come across.......sometime I wish the alfa was a tiny tiny bit german.

I really dont wanna put this back in lol. Buy I like a challenge, if I do this im treating myself to a £25 steak with peppercorn sauce and astel cider with onion rings and chips!

Maybe dugs got a tool made up. Not even sure how to get it from the back of the car.

13mm ring spaner bent at 90d. most V6's we see don't have the top starter motor bolt in, we always refit it, don't want anyone working on a car after we have to think we leave bolts out

Sorry Anesh...I'm backing away from awkward car jobs these days. This job you are fighting at the moment reminds me of doing the clutch master cylinder on the 155 V6 at Xmas. Simple job....if you remove the engine and most of the dash first.....

That tweaked spanner looks like a handy tool, although it might end up being a slightly different shape on a 166 compared to the 156??

Would life be any simpler if you used cap head bolts instead perhaps?

I agree.
On my german car there are allen cap heads for starter motor, in fact one is a nut (on a stud obviously) that looks like a giant hula-hoop when it falls off.
