hi guys,
I bought my 166 a few weeks ago and i've since noticed a high pitched squealing noise coming from the engine.
it's a 99 2.0ts with 91k. belts and tensioners were done at 44k, 55k and again at 72k. no record of the water pump being done.
any idea what it could be?

Cheers in advance,
john.

Easiest way to check is to disconnect the auxiliary drive belt (15mm spanner on the adjusting tensioner to relieve the tension, and prise / slip the belt off...if the noise stops, it was probably the Power steering pump / alternator / aircon pump....or the tensioners....

If it doesn't stop, then maybe the water pump or one of the timing belt tensioners....

Not really possible to be more precise than that.....tho you could try a spray of wd40 onto teach of the suspects in turn, to see if that makes the noise go away temporarily:)
