Hi guys - just joined the Alfa enthusiasts.

Just acquired a 2001 spider with one fault (well one found so far!) - drivers window not working. Stripped it at the weekend and found the motor was disconnected - reconnection showed why - when raised the motor continued to run and had clearly stripped whatever gear was there (very noisy as well). I have disconnected it again and sourced a replacement of the mechanism and motor.

my question is what stops the motor when the window gets to the top (or bottom for that matter) - could I need a controller as well?

Ok clearly too tricky
Not really. You gave the forum 14 hours to respond - a substantial amount of which was overnight. A simple bump would have brought the topic back to the top for this morning not some smart *** comment about it being too tricky.

Can anyone tell me if the window controller is purely acting as a relay?
It's a lot more than a relay. In the workshop manual it is referred to as the Integrated Services Unit. Apart from controlling the windows it also does the central locking, heated rear window, courtesy lights - and on a your car auto drop windows, boot release and fuel flap release.

Part of the function when controlling the windows is monitoring the motor and it will shut down the window motor if it detects an obstruction. The manual also refers to limit switches but there is no evidence for them in the wiring diagram. In reality it's probably all done by monitoring the motor load.

Sorry - did not want to offend anyone

Thanks for the input - very useful - I think i will fit the new mechanism and carefully try it before going for the controller as well. must admit i couldn't see any switches on the limit of movement on the wiring diagram either.

everthing else seem to be working fine although I am not sure it autodrops - i will have to play further

Really do apreciate your time and input
