Spider boot release

I thought I would share (apologies if it’s been stated before) a little addition to the boot release mechanism I fitted as I realised that if the original cable ever broke- I would be screwed getting back in. I purchased an emergency motorcycle brake cable kit for less than a pound. Fitting took about 2 minutes. Simply feed the cable through the latch lever, run the cable around the body to the filler tube. Carefully slip it beween the neck and its rubber sleeve. Pop a lock fitting (in the kit) and you’re done. I didn’t even cut to length, just loop the excess in the middle. Clearly when used in anger the cable will tighten and create a straight path to the latch lever and probably push your boot carpet about a bit, but I can live with that (10 seconds to push back in place). Hope this is of some use. Hopefully photos attached

Have you tested it yet? You know there are some loose nuts on the number plate.

I'm sure it's been posted before on the forum, but it's worth doing the same thing for your bonnet latch. I used a pushbike cable with an electrical crimp ring of suitable size (with the cable passed through it twice to be sure) and threaded the cable through the bulkhead with the original bonnet release. I then looped the cable through an electrical 'chocolate block' connector to give you something to pull on and tucked it under the glovebox. The consequences of the bonnet cable breaking could be inconvenient to say the least!

on mine I just drilled a small hole behind the number plate and fed an emergency cable out the hole, made a loop on the end and taped it behind the number plate.

for those who have no emergency cable fitted, you can release the boot latch by drilling a small hole and inserting a screwdriver at a specific place (search the BB for that, but use the word "trunk" ;))

If the bonnet cable snaps under the bonnet, that is a whole new problem and not an easy one at all....you are very well advised to lay an emergency cable for that.

If either snaps at the pull lever that is normally ok, you can use a pair of pliers to pull on the inner cable to release the latch.
