Afternoon,

Looking for some guidance on upgrading my speakers/sound system on my 2012 Giulietta. Currently the noise is quite crackly at higher volumes and the sound in the back is hardly there.. At lower volumes the sound lacks definition or 'bite'.

This is my first car and my first upgrade so please bear with me:

Question 1:
Any recommendations on what speakers to buy? I don't really want to spend more than £200.. £250 tops. Is it possible to fit a subwoofer in?

Question 2:
Can I fit these myself? Is it hard for somebody with no car fittings experience but reasonably practical, a handy-man type.

Question 3:
How much would I expect to pay a garage to fit speakers for me in London? I found a great Italian car / Alfa specialist in Clapham, Firela motors who did my MOT recently. Guess will give them a shout when they open in morning...

Cheers!

1) I have the gladen SQX 165, HSK 165.4 will also be really good. But probably the best would be to try and visit a car audio dealer and go and listen what sounds best to you, sound is a really personal thing. If you want a subwoofer you will also need an amplifier, you can either instal the amplifier through a high/low converter or by exchanging the whole radio cable tree. I personally did the last which in the end is easier and cheaper.

2) I upgraded my sound system a while ago and to be honest, I'm also not the most handy person out there, but I managed. If you look around here and also elsewhere you will be able to find plenty if DIY pages on how to take of the door panels.

3) only fitting speakers with no amplier or anything else would not be much more than a half hour of work, so costs should be quite limited.

My advice, install a 4 channel amplifier, decent speakers, insulate front doors & add subwoofer. With speakers alone I don't think you will get the desired effect. Though of course this will raise the price quite a bit so that will be up to you, perhaps it will be an idea to first upgrade the speakers and insulate the doors. You can instal an amplifier and sub later on if you wish so.
