Smelly orange snow fell this week in southern Siberia, covering 100 square kilometers (39 square miles) and prompting Russia's Emergency Ministry to send investigators to the region.

Snow that fell Jan. 31 has a ``light yellow or orange tone with oily spots and a rotten smell,'' the Emergency Ministry said today in a statement on its Web site. The snow fell along a 100-kilometer long, one-kilometer wide strip in the regions of Tomsk and Omsk. About 27,000 people in the Omsk region were affected, the ministry said. There were no numbers for the Tomsk region. The ministry advised residents not to use the snow for domestic purposes and to keep animals away from it.

No health problems have been reported as a result of the snowfall. Emergency ministry workers will carry out tests on the snow to establish the reason for is discoloration, the ministry said.

Any metion of what it smelt like?

Could be frozen nitrogen dioxide. The oxidiser used in used in certain Russian space rockets breaks down to NO2 (in the presence of air) which is orangey-red in colour, and a bit wiffy.

Would freeze at Siberian temperatures.
