Folks,

Yes i have asked this question b4 (last week) but due to various
I.T. glitches I need to ask it again, soooo my 156 2.4 JTD basically humms inside the car of diesel, this is particulary noticable when pulling up eg at lights, havin the fan on makes it humm even more.

Any ideas???

when mine ws like this it was because the fule filter hadn't been fitted properly by the Alfa Servicer....any fuel leak will seem the same.

Not sure on the 2.4 but on the 1.9 there is a water sensor screwed into the base of the filter, this can leak if over-tightened and the plastic fails; they are fragile especially if a monkey does the service

A leak can be detected by feeling the base of the filter - oooh misses

They are relatively easy to replace, mine cost about £18.

Well the filter is one possibility if the car has been maintained according to the appearance of the smell ...

Otherwise i would suggest you verify each feeding pipe at the bolt level and look for diesel drops, wet pipe, ... one of the bolt might be losen even very little ... which explains the more you push the throttle the more the diesel will leak and the smell will increase !

It happened to my 1.9 this summer, eventually once you have the smell, keep the enigne on open the boot and look for smoke between the cockpit and the engine (easier to view at night with a light than in daylight) ... the smell comes from diesel spreading on a warm part of the engine ... so for sure it is a leak ...even a small one.

Cheers
