 Loaded up last Saturday morning for a week in Scotland, turned key and 'click' nothing, turned headlights on and tried again, same thing but headlights dulled! Rolled car back in reverse with key turned and starter worked...nervous wreck all week every time car had to be started but performed faultlessly, last stop on way home and click, had to get passing hiking to push it off.....checked all connections and tried lead straight onto solenoid when it failed this morning and nothing......basically must be a bad spot in starter motor, found out from previous owner it had a starter ealier this year:) so will be under warranty if garage comes up with promised invoice!
Question - are these 2.4Jtd staters prone to failure or have mine just been unlucky?

No they're not prone and have you checked the battery voltage, also check the rear lights with the ignition off, if anything is dimly glowing perminantly and you have a bulb warning with ignition on then you need a new rev counter as the cicuits fried and this is flattening the battery, alernatively remove and clean the relays next to the battery as they corrode easily and will cause this too.
