So I've had the car that was bought from a "specialist" 18 months/20000 miles ago, cambelt was meant to have been changed along with the water pump when i bought it. yet i have a beautiful 159 with a fecked engine.

so i obviously need to get it sorted, .
when looking at the belt it seem oily, but the car hasn't lost any oil and was serviced last month so any leaks should have really been spotted then. so i cant see a reason why it would have shredded its belt after only 20k unless something wasn't done properly.

now the question is do i get the garage i bought it from to look at it (don't really have much faith in them) or take it to a independent that i do trust and then try to recover costs after?

I haven't spoken to the garage i bought it from because i needed to cool off and i don't want to have a go if it wasn't their fault.

can anyone think of a reason why the belt would be oily and would this cause a failure so premature?

something that might be worth mentioning is that when i first bought it i had to get a squealing alternator belt changed when they claimed to have done it but the independent i took it to said that it hadn't. but i did recover costs at the time for this.

Thanks for any responses in advance :)

poor quality belt, belt over tensioned, oil on belt when it was installed causing it to degrade, just plain bad luck :(

alternator belt is different so shouldnt have anything to do with it. unfortunately it will probably required an engine strip to see if anything else is damaged

Thanks, i spoke to autolusso very briefly before my phone died and if im lucky about £1000 depending on what variant of the engine is fitted.
my thoughts were that if they hadnt done the alternator belt, had they really done the cambelt... was going to be selling it fairly soon, glad it happened to me and not a new owner..

Any brand markings left on the belt? Bad luck that the thing has given up so soon but not unheard of I'm afraid.

FPT would have been the OEM belt fitted at the factory surely?

That's very mangled.

Phone died ??? I thought you put the phone down or fell over when I gave you the price :D:D:D

It should be quite an easy fix, we have all the parts in stock

And that does look like an original belt

Haha, no Ned I will be booking it in when i get the cash together and figure out how you're going to get it off the drive. tbh I thought it would be worse and i'll get you to do the updates you mentioned when you serviced it and see what else depending on the bill :)

would you be able to do a report of your findings or something just in case I have to go back to the garage I bought it from?

i am secretly enjoying driving the GTV daily even though its costing me a fortune in petrol.

Yes we can do a report, if need be I have an independent engineer that can do a report which will carry more weight if you need to go to court etc. Was the car sold to you as having had the cam belt replaced??

We can organize collection for you

sorry just got home from work
ok that might be an option, doesn't sound cheap though. Will discuss that with you when I get around to sorting the cash out.
yes it was advertised that it would be replaced on sale and i got them to include the water pump as part of the deal.
yea you're significantly cheaper than what i paid the AA to get me from Suffolk to Kent! its just at the end of an awkward drive way and its currently nose first too.
