Firearms for all officers or stay as we are with only specialist officers carrying guns on our streets?

i'll start - definitely not. to me, it's part of what makes uk policing so refreshingly different to the iron fist of overseas police. and arming the police will just up the ante and encourage criminals to get even more tooled up themselves.

last - but by no means least - thee vast majority of police officers don't want to be armed

Both good points Al and it completely agree an arms-race is not going to improve police officer safety and can only put the public at greater risk. The policy of using trained fire arms officer units once a serious incident is reported is the best way of dealing with things IMHO. I realise lives can be lost in any first exchange of fire, putting the patrolling officer at risk. However as you say most of the police agree they should not be armed so are prepared to some extent to take that risk.

I have lived in both the USA and Germany and don't in any way feel its safer for the police to be armed.

Also once you do arm all the police in the UK there is no going back.

Surprisingly, I'm voting no:wow:

More armed units though and the provision of non lethal incapicitants for each officer (multi shot tazer plus raptor spray).

Is N. Ireland not part of the UK and they carry machine guns over there and have done so for over 40 years.

 It's not that bad!

PSNI officers carry hand guns although in some of the more errr... problematic areas you'll usually find the armoured Land Rovers will have an officer with a machine gun as well.

There haven't been that many incidents of police here discharging their weapons as, historically, it was the army who were usually involved in shooting incidents. The police took a lot of flak (no pun intended) over the use of baton rounds in public order situations.

Obviously the situation here in NI has been different due to the various terrorist organisations but realistically I don't think it would be the right decision to arm all officers in a knee-jerk decision.

to clarify, the question relates to england, wales & scotland, where officers aren't routinely armed

What about the good old RUC Jon?
It's almost 11 years since we had the RUC. It's very rare to see armoured police vehicles now, never mind SMG toting police officers.

Equally important, perhaps, is that these two unfortunate officers would still have been ambushed and would have still been murdered?

We'd just have more shootings, more accidental ones, more through fearful over-reaction, more through pre-emptive attacks, more running gun battles with innocents caught in the area.

it will bring other problems for sure.. but the price society is paying is large anyway.. innocents will be killed, they'll be called mistakes.

its upping the ante, when things have slipped so low..

there are very good reasons why the british police have resisted so long in carry guns. i would prefer only higer ranking/trained personnel carry guns rather than all...

the day will come... thats for sure.. George Orwell was onto something...
