My wife came back from Sainsburys with 2 bags of Kettle Chips that were supposedly half price. When she checked her till reciept as she always does she found she had been charged full. They had put the offer item on the end of the aisle and placed the more popular one next to it. This is the third time she has caught stores out at this, the worst case was putting £10 bottles of wine next to ones on offer at 3 for £10.
Most families can't afford to be mis lead like this by supermarkets that make millions in profit anyway. Check your reciept every time even if you can afford to lose the money. Don't let them get away with it.
Not really a rant,just for information :)

That's just made me check that I didn't pay £10 for a bottle of plonk that was advertised as half price.....I hadn't !

As you say though, you need to be as sharp as the supermarket giants if you don't want to be ripped off.......

.......2 for 1 on veg/salad/fruit that only has a few days SBD and you won't use it up anyway is a classic example.

As I'm sure many folk do, I check the price per gram/litre info to make sure that when faced with the choice of two similar items, I get the best value:)

Tescos got me a couple of months ago with an offer of buy 3 for £10. While I noticed the big offer sign I failed to notice the offer didn't actually start for a couple of days. I got charge full price but didn't notice until it was too late.

I complained via email but Tesco never even replied.

Watch Tesco for pack sizes. Twice recently I have seen 600g jars on "offer" when two 300g jars are cheaper.

How sad are we all, checking our till receipts, reading the small print on offers and working out the 'price per unit/100g' etc?

I'm off to hand in me man card. :( I blame Tesco and Morrisons

As recently as a year ago, whilst I didn't throw money away, I just put in the trolley what I liked, pretty much regardless of cost.

Now I can't afford to be quite so lavish, and I've surprised myself at how quickly I've embraced the idea of getting the best possible value at supermarkets.

This will sound pretty bad, but I never used to buy any 'basics/own brand' items......silly and snobbish really. Now, I can't afford to buy the brands I used to, and I enjoy knowing that I've saved a few quid here and there:thumbs:

I know what you mean 4M.

I would milk a gnat, if I could get the stool under it.

Initial shop is done at Aldi, then off to Tossco or Morrisons depending on what is on offer. And yes, I do the shopping as it is much cheaper than sending Mrs Pat out armed with a credit card :tut:

You would need quite a few jars of Horseradish to choke that down! :wow:

Have you tried a farm shop for your veggies ? Better quality usually and you can get only what you need, nothing is pre packed in 500g or 250g packs. ;):D
I have an allotment, told you I was tight. I now have 9 supermarket fruit boxes in a stack filled with spuds, 4 strings of garlic, enough runner beans to burst a freezer and can't look a broad bean in the eye.

I got caught out by The Devil's Greengrocer like this yesterday.

The sad fact is it is entirely legal as price is not fixed until money changes hands. You can advertise stuff at whatever price you want and charge something else at the till.

Noticed a similar thing last week at what used to be Netto (now Ugo) - 100g Nescafe with a label advertising them at £1.99, whereas 200g were £4.69......so bought 2 x 100g......and a few other things.

Only noticed when I checked the receipt on getting home that I'd been charged £2,25 each. Went back Saturday as we were passing, and needed a few bits, and went to check - display was still the same, but hidden at the bottom of the shelf, partially hidden by a rail, the 100g jars were priced at £2.25.....still cheaper than buying the 200g jar of course, stupidly enough....

Called over a passing employee who I recognised as one of the managers, and in fairness there was no argument - he refunded the massive sum of 52p......but he did remove the £1.99 label, claiming it should never have been there.......

As you say it does feel a bit sad checking the pennies like this, but the way money is these days, its got to be done.....and although I hate shopping, I pass the store most days, and milady has arthritic knees making walking around the shops harder these days, so its easier for me to do it......

I am now in the habit of checking £/gm as soon as I see a bogof or larger items marked as "offers".....sad maybe, but it makes me feel good that the supermarket brains have not outwitted me........

loo roll is the one that drives me mad, I now always work out the price per roll as I have often found a smaller pack works out at less per roll than a huge one, the other week 3 packs of 4 was less than a pack of 12 for example

I get the 4 pack of jumbo roll eco friendly bog roll. One of those lasts months!

In terms of sharp practices, supermarkets gouge their suppliers more than their
customers with their scams. ;)

I don't get it. READ THE LABEL. It's obvious enough. If you take it back it's not as if the supermarket tells you to bugger and refuses to give you a refund either. Even if you don't have the recipt they will swap it for an item of equal value so long as they stock the item you have taken back. All in all I think they are pretty reasonable. Just pay more attention. Tesco's deal labels are red and yellow while their normal ones are white and blue. I'm pretty sure all other supermarkets do the same.
Correct some families can't afford to make a mistake but if money is that tight they should be paying more attention to what they are slinging in their basket and is 3for £10 wine really something a hard up family should putting in their basket? That could the the igredients to another evening meal. If so then they have their priorities wrong and I have no pity.
