Hi,

Just been quoted 800+ for a 60k service + cambelt on my 156 2.0 TS.
That was from a maindealer but still a little steep i feel.
Trained as a motor mechanic for 6 years when i was a lad so will probably get my hands dirty and do it myself using geniune Alfa parts.

Lots of Questions......
Exactly how difficult are the belts to change?
Guess im gonna need some special tools and if so what will i need?
Can anybody tell me exactly what a 60k service consists of?
Are those diagonostic CDs you can get off Ebay any good?
And finally what engine oil would you recomend?

To answer parts of your question;
Don't know how difficult
Yes, you'll need the special cam locking tools
The big cost in the 60K is normally the spark plugs; if you hunt around you can get them for less than £10 each (try shop4parts) - Alfa used to charge £20 each for them - don't forget there are 8!

If you are doing the cambelt, make sure you do the tensioners, variator, and balance belts at the same time....

Absolutley loads of debate on what oil to use; pay your money and take your choice, I'd use a decent semi-synthetic or synthetic 10w-40

i've done the 2.0 belt change a few years ago, its really not as hard as everyone makes out. access makes it fiddly, and the balance shaft belt makes it different to your average twin cam, but its still just a timing belt change at the end of the day. nothing a half competent DIYer couldnt do in 1 day.

i didnt use any special tools, i simply marked the cam pulleys with tippex and locked the crank with a screwdriver on the flywheel. instead of a tensioner tool i used a screwdriver and just pushed hard.

none of the alfa myths came true, which tbh was expected. the whole "take it to a specialist or you'll die" scare stories proved to be wrong. there are plenty of engines that are much more difficult to work on than a twinspark, such as the fiat 20v 5pot.

the service should include:
engine oil
engine oil filter
air filter
cabin filter
coolant (check/replace)
brake fluid (check/replace)
PAS fluid (check)
gearbox fluid (check)
spark plugs x8
HT leads x4

i also include redex to clean the valves (poured in plug holes) and engine flush used when changing oil. i always replace the coolant every year and also the brake fluid and PAS fluid if i dont 100% it has been done in the last 3 years.

for the timing belt service on the 2.0 you need:
cambelt
cambelt tensioner pulley
cambelt idler pulley
balance shaft belt
balance shaft tensioner pulley

i only use gates powergrip belts. i would keep away from the alfa crap because they dont last as long. total parts cost should be £90-130 depending on brand and if you buy a kit of seperate parts. i bought a kit but then replaced the timing belt with a seperate gates powergrip.

at the same time you need to inspect the water pump to determine if the bearing is good enough to last another 35k. on a 60k engine it would be very odd if the water pump needed changing.

the CD's you get are good. i use the elearn CD, it isnt the most user fiendly interface, but it does contain all the info you find in the manual used by the dealers (it has scans of the sheets in the alfa manual but you navigate to them in a point&click based interface). add to that the eper the electronic parts catalogue (eper.fiatforum.com) to get part numbers and prices and you have everything you'll ever need.

the engine oil debate exists on every forum and its the same with the twinsparks. personally i believe 10w40 is most suitable, and you should use semi or full synthetic depending on what the engine has been ran on previously. it is almost always semi because that is what the dealers used during the first few years of its life.

Thanks for the responses and advice, I've decided im going to do it myself.
Marking the camwheels with tipex is oldschool but has always worked for me :) Glad to hear i dont necessarily need to fork out money on special tooling as well.
Will check out eper.fiatforum.com and will also get hold off one of them CD Rom's.

Just a thought, I see you are Hampshire based, I stumbled across an interesting Alfa dealer today, based in Blandford Forum, Dorset
Red Motori Ltd On the website that quote they can do a 156 cambelt change FROM £220. Have a look, for some reason the quote is via the stocklist, at the bottom of the Alfa's. I have had no experience of them but if anyone has then feel free to comment. Might at least be worth a call?

Thanks for the link gtotz but Dorset is miles away im right up on the northern tip of Hampshire. would cost me what id save in petrol :lol:
