Servicing: Have I been stiched up like a kipper??

I'm new to the Alfa world and after buying my nearly new GT I thought I would make a special effort with thisone and not cut corners, so called a Alfa specialist independant for a full cam belt, water pump and service.
On the phone I was advised that it should come in at around £500 and thought, although a little steep(?) would be worth it for peace of mind.

Imagine my suprise when I got back to a bill of £700 instead. . :wow: I thought other bits may have been done but no. Just normal service, cam belt and pump . . ?

Christ......

I had mine done 3 weeks ago.

I had done....

Cambelt and tensioners
Auxilary Belt
Cam Variator
Waterpump
Rocker Gasket

I was charged £490.00

They even collected the car from home, done the work and returned it same day

This was done by an alfa specialist.

That does seem bloody dear mate....

I would be on the blower giving them grief, its not like they don't know the cost of parts, and the simple maths of putting thier hourly on top.

Yes you have been 'stitched like a kipper'.

For example exactly the same job on my 156 Sport JTD 16v 150 came to £550 at the dealer, but this also included changing the alternator belt, tensioner and idler (a must with every cambelt change on the JTDs). The prices you quote are either at, or in excess, of dealer prices.

Name the specialist please. You've been done chum.

Why did they tell you £500 then bill you £700 have they explained why it was 40% more than estimated?

Name & shame
Exactly what I thought. From doing a little research on here £500 seemed to be about worst case. I accepted £500 price from them because they had a lot of glowing references on here.

Before they took the car, they pointed out to me a squeak on the brakes which they said they would sort and indeed I pointed out a problem with the radio not working which they failed to look at. When I got home the undertray was also scraping along the road which I bolted up myself. (although this had been damaged before.)

I have spoken to them on the phone now and they said bring it back in to sort the radio and brakes but it's a 50 min drive from me and a day off work!

I am going to give them a further chance to rectify before I spout off their name. Want to give them a chance to respond first.
£699 inc vat is about right for the work he has had done. He has'nt been stitched up like a kipper at all. I take it all you guy's work for free???? 4.5 hours labour is more than fair for what he has had done and the costs of the parts is spot on.

And before I get a flaming this job has nothing to do with us either I just feel it's unfair towards the motortrade that people expect us to work for free!
To be fair, if 700 was discussed before I could have had the option of not taking it before. Saying it after the service has been done and I can do nothing about it is the part about being stitched up.

Do you do this at JJB?

The parts alone (none of which look massively expensive to me) come to well over £300 including VAT.

The labour rate seems a tad high but then I don't know what the going rate is for Alfa specialists. 4.5 hours' labour doesn't look unreasonable to me.
3.5 hours for a cambelt and water pump job seems a bit long to me.

Just my 2p though. :)
hrs sound ok, its just the rate..

PS AutoLusso need to adjust the 17.5% VAT rate on there service page :p
By comparison,
here in Belgrade (Serbia) that service cost 250e (60e for service and rest for parts) for my JTD mjet.
Warranties for Cambelt, and the pump is 60.000 km.

Cambelt kit 62e
Water pump 26,5e
Roller for pk belt (dont know how to translate) 17e
Motor Oil Selenia WR 37e
Oli Filter 6e
Air Filter 8e
Diesel Filter 18e
Clima Filter 16e
Service 60e

Prices are for unauthorized service that gives its guarantee as one of the best service in Serbia.

Adds up to £650

Are you sure £9 for oil is right and not £9 per litre?
Whoa.

Next time, I'll drive to Serbia, have a night in a hotel and still have enough change for a Mars bar on the Ferry.

We didn't put our prices up with the VAT, we kept them the same so you all get a better deal :p
Hi tallus
Sorry to hear what happened ,i am surprized they did not call you to say that it was going to be more and agree a new price with you . mine needed doing ,so i rang around a few alfa dealers but after picking my self off the floor with the prices they quoted i decided to go a local garage ,i even bought the parts myself and saved a fortune ( cambelt kit £89 water pump £35 ) garage charged me 3 hours labour at £37 per hour .
total cost including vat and parts £257. this was on a 156 1.8 ts
i would go back to the garage if i were you and try and sort somethig out .best of luck
yeah but you still need to adjust your stated VAT rate - you just keep your prices the same :)

You pay 20% VAT - you could add onto your site that you have kept prices frozen from pre VAT rise
