Lots of people sell low value cars of FB/Market Place. High Valued cars are usually bought on the “ Never, Never” as its prudent to buy from a dealer. Plus creditors prefer you to buy from a dealer.

Ebay is probably the best place Fred. Sold my very old Nissan Primera (I had it to tide me over for 6 weeks) and lost 50% in that time but had a good few interested people once I dropped the price to a realistic value. I bought from secondhand car trader and obviously way too much with no warranty. He was selling his father's car and as such it came 'sold as seen, now f***off'. I see the swear filter is still not catching that.

Sold my CLK to a 'we auction your car' company and I think got a decent offer. I asked about P/X on my New Mercedes CLA but Mercedes said they did not want my old rusty pile of Mercedes shitness.

A good few years ago I sold my daughter's 1998 family owned from new MX5 (was her mum's before) on Pistonheads. MX5's being such brilliant little cars sell well on specialist sites but unfortunately your brother's faceless German perceived reliability is (dare I say) completely uninteresting. eBay is your friend, auction or 'buy it now'. Just getting the price right is the thing. eBay = bargain and that's what the buyer expects. It works though and I feel you get what it is worth on the day.

I've just put my Saab up for sale in the classifieds of another forum. I expect it'll probably be a nightmare.

I expect that at some point I'll put mine on eBay. At which point every bell end in the northern hemisphere will beat a path to my door with their what's your best price for cash, I saw a lovely one of these yesterday for £200, can I pay in installments, will you swap for a gas barbeque nonsense.

Does Exchange and Mart or Autotrader not have an online presence? I know they have heaps of competition online, but there must still be some equity in those brands to create a good environment online to buy/sell used cars. As was said earlier, there probably is a perception - maybe unfairly - that a car being sold on gumtree or eBay is probably a duffer that needs shifting quickly.

Where’s Arfur Daily when you need him? :)

The complication of the Autotrader website is the reason VW set up the easier to understand heycar site with Mercedes. And now they have “Honest” John under their control....

Ah, so when you select that you’re looking for a four year old diesel hatch, auto, five doors, 40,000 miles, can we guess which three models pop up first? ;-)
