Are there any options for tidying up or replacing a selespeed steeringwheel?

I've worn through the shiny surface, and it's looking obviously worn now.

I'm not a fan of covers.

The wheel is in a 147.. it doesn't look like it could be recovered. It looks like it's a plastic or rubber finish made to look like leather. Is it still possible to get that sort of thing done, without bulking it up too much?
