Today my selespeed wouldn't select a gear whilst at a railway level crossing, lucky enough though it would go into reverse. I had my 6 year old daughter in the car. How many people are having problems with selespeed. It is dangerous and I urge everyone to write or phone their local trading standards and report problems to them and to ALFA. If everyone complains surely this will help publise this dangerous promblem and force ALFA to commit to a gerabox recall!!!

Without being funny, I dont have a Selespeed, but what are you doing stopped in the middle of a crossing?

I always cross with enough momentum to get over even if I lose power.

i think that is a known concern mate, something to do with a clutch pin or similar and im sure it did get a recall (the manual cars certainly did for the same thing).

its only on 03> models i believe, yours must be 03 or newer??

mine has never given me as much as a sniffle of trouble, and its been very abused!

I never put my selespeed in N, while im sat at lights or lcl crossing or traffic its always in 1.
Im confused to how u got onto the tracks and out of gear? did the car jump into N, gearbox malfunction? knocked the lever?
Ive never had a problem with selespeed 60k and going strong.

That is bad, but how did you end up stopped on the line? If there was traffic, I'd have waited til it had cleared and then proceeded to cross, never stop on a line, or as CJ said, start it with enough momentum to get you all the way across, even if you loose power.

Scary situation though would definitely inform Alfa..

Could have happened in a manual though, for example clutch cylinder failure and loss of hydraulics..

We all know the Selespeed has many problems and selecting a gear can be one of them but I dont think you'd get very far complaining about it to trading standards, you could have broken down in any car and been in the same situation.

I've had 7 years of fairly trouble free motoring from my Selespeed and it has never left me in a dangerous situation

Just to say the guy may have been waiting for the train to pass then pulled away after the barriers went up and it moved then lost all gears. Its happend to many people at junctions. I always drive towards junctions fast enough to turn into them even if the engine dies, But you cant if you are pulling out of a junction,

Just to defend the chappy before you ripp him apart.

Mind you with an alfa He should be able to get up to crusing speed of 30 within 3 Meters from Lights to rail lines, NOT.....

Selespeed is a brilliant idea, but in usual Alfa fashion, the engineering is not bulletproof enough. I know my Alfa specialists keep a Selespeed actuator in stock as its a fairly common fail item. They would not stock such a pricey item unless they had cars needing them.

Shame really. Happily a lot of people get on fine with it, and yes..the poor lad did say he was AT a level crossing..he did not say he was ON the level crossing and trying to untie Olive Oyl from the rails as the train approached.

Give him a break..his Alfas bust..that bad enough:(

If he wasn't "on" the crossing, why the big panic about it being dangerous and lucky to get reverse?

Why indeed, but he did say at the crossing, not on, so I am simply taking him at his word until I am corrected.

Either way its not a good place to be stuck with or without a young child in the car i'd have thought, so I am just trying to be a bit understanding of a predicament that has obviously upset him. Nowt wrong with that.

Personally I wouldn't have a Selespeed. It seems more of case of when and not if it goes wrong.

Did prodigygee say how long he has owned his Sele'? I love mine,(ours) but I have to try to remember things it's likely to do. For example, I was reversing it back into the garage, with the drivers door slightly open and she went into neutral:(: Stupid me, in built Sele' safety thing, door open, in gear, I'm not letting you go anywhere, you stupid driver. Sorry, car, I forgot.

Sounds very bad; but as others have mentioned how come you were changing gear over the actual railway line?
