my new camera came with a 4 gig SDHC card - only trouble is, my laptop's 5 years old and will only recognise normal SD cards, not the new HC type

i'm not too hot on IT stuff, but thought i might need something like this:

or - better still - is there some software i can 'magic' off the internet and load onto the laptop instead?

The new memory cards seem to exceed the limits of the readers pretty quick.

My Laptop would not read a 2GB card so I went and got a USB new reader which worked up until I got a 4GB card, no surprises it wouldn't read it so had to get another USB reader and now that one wont read my new 16GB cards and so I have to manually download the pics from the camera via USB!

Laptop built in SD card readers are the worst as they seem to be a few steps behind when they hit production and the firmware doesnt seem very future proof.
I now tell customers before thet buy a laptop that I cant guarantee that the Built in SD card reader will work with their cards.

I'd recommend going for a reader that states that it will work with the biggest card available to day and then In a year or so it will still be usable.

Had the same situation recently when I bought a new camera. My printer however has its own card reader and is newer than my PC so can read it via this. If you have a printer with card reader this is worth a try.

lost my main camera (sony one) in liverpool on the weekend of my 40th, so i bought a 2nd hand little lumix one off ebay so i could have a pcoekt size one
















but then i lost that one as well somewhere in france last month. so i've bought another lumix one off ebay which i (so far) haven't lost yet...

I've got one of those readers. I can confirm that it will read 4Gb SD HC cards - haven't tried anything bigger.

roswell - mine's a TZ3, similar to yours but 7.2 mp and 10x optical zoom. think the TZ6 is 10mp and 12x zoom?

The lead will work, yes. The camera acts as the card reader and when plugged in, the PC sees the camera as a drive just like it would with the card reader. :thumbs:

Or have you lost it already?

connecting the camera directly to the computer sounds good - having an external card reader just means somethign else which i will inevitably lose






now if only i could find that damn usb cable....
