Hello All,

Is it ok to use SAE 5W 30 oil in the 159 - 1.9 JTDM engine ?
As far as I know recommended is SAE 5 W40 ...not sure if there is much difference to 5w 30.
I'm thinking 5W 30 is thinner at engine op temp so better fuel economy ... any thoughts ?

The correct oil for the 159 1.9JTD is 5W30 ACEA C2 spec.

The GF has a diesel Bravo with the same engine in (150BHP one).

The handbook specifies 5w40, and the car is not fitted with a DPF. The car is a 2007 model.

From 2008 onwards the Bravo handbook changed to specifying 5w30. I have read that this is primarily due to the addition of a DPF, as the 5w30 is better in this regard.

How can the oil make any difference to the DPF?
There will always be some oil in the combustion chamber when you start and a thinner oil burns off quicker which helps cold start emissions.

The 2.4JTD 159 still uses 5W40 though.

I have a feeling GM spec'd 5W30 from the start with the 1.9JTD in their cars, so this may just be Alfa/Fiat catching up!
