Further to my post about high revving engines, I tested a 2001 TS Alfa with 36000ks. I agree with you all that 3000RPM @60mph doesnt appear to present a labouring engine however this particular example had a rumbling noise paricularly at roundabouts but also occasionally on level ground. The owner avoided my questions, funnnny. Any suggestions what it might be? Ill be looking at a few more before deciding what to get. They are one of the best looking sports cars I have ever seen.

Hi Djsharpe. Rumbling noise could be a wheel bearing or maby C.V joint on the way out.

Sounds a likely diagnosis, try driving in circles at full lock slowly (both directions) and see if you hear a knocking sound. This usually indicates CV joints. Also get the car jacked up and try looking for play in each wheel, which would indicate a wheel bearing.

It could also be as simple as getting an alignment done, the tracking being out could cause unusual noises, check for uneven tyre wear.

Once you've found the cause, knock a bit off the price to rectify it.
