Coming home from work on Monday about 5mins from my house suddenly I hear a bad knocking noise. That the one, the big end has gone. 2 and a half months after purchase it looks like my Alfa experience is over :(

Wish I did run it low on oil, no got all the work done on it always kept it topped up with oil but for what ever reason it died on me. It got me home so its still driving, but as soon as you accelerate the noise kicks in.

Thanks for all the messages guys.

Not the first story I've heard like this. Hopefully you can source a replacement head from a rear-ended 156 and drop it in. Cheaper than buying a new(er) car.

if you're thinking of going that route, this site'll be a help to ya:

PartFinder | Car Dismantlers | Car Breakers | Car Parts | Parts Request
Thats a good site thanks for that. I am in the middle of a bit of a battle with the garage. As I only have the car 2 and 1/2 months I'm trying to prove it is no normal wear and tear on a car of that year/millage and that the car does not do what it was purchased to do. I'll see how I get on there first.

It broke my heart when it happened, I really thought i put enough work and care into it to stop the car failing on me :(

Best of luck with the battle.

Like Fluffyduff says, "Might be worth throwing a set of shells at it if the crank is ok." I've been quoted £250 by an Alfa specialist (in the wrong country, unfortunately) to do just that. Obviously there's a risk the crank pins are oval but at least it might be saleable with new big ends, if that's what's knocking.

Surely all garages give at least 3 months warrenty on used cars.
I'd threathen them with a solicitor if they dont look after you

There's a TS engine on eBay for £700. I can't say whether that's a good price or not.

I am starting to really wonder about what Honest John said on his website about the oil pumps failing.

All these 'issues' just reminds of that US website called Jags that Run.

Having a boring job I am was really wondering the other week if Alfa should have just used another Fiat group engine and 'Alfa-rised' that?

Someone must have put the Integrale engine in a 156, or the Fiat 20V turbo motor?

I was told by a highly recommended specialist that the pumps aren't prone to failure, and that my brand new one wasn't re useable for my engine rebuild...
